Hi @dana23409,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Scanjet 4890 scanner is not working after setting up your new HP Omnidesk Tower. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check Connections

Make sure the scanner’s USB cable is securely connected to the tower (try a rear USB port, not front).

Avoid using USB hubs or extension cables.

Verify Power

Ensure the scanner’s power adapter is properly plugged in and the scanner shows signs of power (lights or sounds when turned on).

Confirm Scanner Compatibility

The HP Scanjet 4890 is an older model, and HP no longer provides drivers for newer versions of Windows.

Check which operating system is installed on your new tower (e.g., Windows 10/11). The 4890 has official drivers only up to Windows 7/8.

Install Drivers/Software

Go to HP’s support website and search for HP Scanjet 4890 drivers.

If you’re on Windows 10/11, the official driver may not be available. In this case:

Try installing the last available Windows 7/8 driver in compatibility mode (right-click setup file → Properties → Compatibility → choose Windows 7).

Alternatively, use third-party scanning software such as VueScan (paid, but supports the 4890 on modern Windows).

Test with Windows Fax and Scan

Open Windows Fax and Scan (type in search bar).

See if the scanner is detected, if not, the driver is likely missing.

Check Device Manager

Press Windows + X > Device Manager.

Look under Imaging Devices or Other devices for the HP Scanjet.

If it shows with a yellow warning, right-click → Update driver → Search automatically, or install the downloaded driver manually.

I hope this helps.
