Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP8625 (aka HP8620)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Occasionaly (once or twice a day, about) I get a message and icon telling me that "scan to computer is no longer working."

The ONLY thing that fixes it is to power off the printer (with its button) and then unplug it. (I am not 100% sure but I THINK Iit needs to beunplug it to fix this.) When it comes back up all is well. Even a power cycle initiaed through the EWS does not fix it. re-enabling it with the "manage Scan to Computer" utility does not work -- it hangs w/o completing the enable step.

I ran Print and Scan Doctor to no avail. It hangs part way through when the printer is in this state. Once the printre is brought back up again the Print and Scan Doctor runs all the way through without repoting any errors.

The HP Update utility says my printer driver and software are up to date.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

That's a message indicating that the connection to the printer is temporarily lost, but it should come back up again.  You should not have to power cycle or reinstall your printer or software.

If the constant message is bothering, then you can disable the "Scan to Computer' feature and enable it only when you need to use the printer control panel to scan to computer.

For a more reliable connection, you may want to consider using a TCP/IP port:

Create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

Let us know if that works

Greenturtle,

OK, did that.

I now have the printer listed twice. One has green checkmark (meaning default printer). That has the new TCP/IP port selected. The other does not offer a "printer properties" selection.

Printing works OK as does scan to computer.  I will see how well that "sticks" over the next couple of days.

Should I do anything about that second copy of the printer in the device list? EDIT: The extraneous printer device went away on a restart.

And what was that original port? I forgot to write it down! EDIT: I think I figured out to us the WSD port.
