I just want to know before I waste any more time - is it no longer possible to print online with an HP printer from Microsoft 10 without switching off the S mode - which is microsoft's own security??

One then has to buy McAffie Security because Microsoft's has been switched off!.

I have done this already with another HP printer Deskjet 2710 although I also have another standing order to McAffie for a computer I no longer own!. I do not want to have to pay more to McAffie which one then sets up standing orders forever for. .

Welcome to the HP Community.

 

"S mode" is not Microsoft's own security - "S mode" is a limited form of Windows that only allows the user to download / install applications from the Microsoft Store.  This "cannot install normal software" does result in a form of security because the operator has little access to the Operating System - this limitation generally limits the damage he / she / they can do.  Windows Operating System Security is Windows Defender and comes installed with Windows.

 

Because Deskjet 1050 printer is so old, the application that one could use in place of the full driver printer software may not work in your environment.

Because you cannot install the printer software, the printer is limited to whatever print drivers can be supplied by Windows.

 

Is it worth switching out of S mode?

Truthfully, in the case of this printer, even if you switch out of S mode, the printer software might - or might not - work with the latest Versions of Windows.  Printer software was last released back in 2014 and the actual software might be older than that.

 

As for McAfee security software - use it or not - whether you use McAfee security has naught to do with whether you can print. 

Security Software is not directly related to printing.  The caveat / exception:  Any security software might block other software from running or being installed.  Most security software generally includes Settings that allow the user / owner / operator to adjust the security to allow certain software / applications that the user deems "safe to use".

Thanks very much. I switched out of  S mode Microsoft 10 for another wifi HP printer (in France) and as soon as I did that the feature to buy McAffie came up - that's why they seemed related. I actually have another HP wifi printer here in UK sitting in its box still but wanted to get the old Deskjet 1050 to work as there is nothing wrong with it. I think it is more plastic to throw out too! thanks.

Yes I know! I have now bought a new printer (cheaper than buying new lap top). It is a Canon as I think my HP Lap top is confusing my HP wifi Deskjet printer I have in Uk (brand new) which is exactly the same wifi Deskjet printer model as the one I was using in France (but a different machine}. It is delivered tomorrow and I am having a technology expert coming to my home on Wednesday to install it to print on line!! I actually will then have 4 printers - 3 HPs and a Canon !
