HP All-in-One 6830
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have read a huge number of HP documents and Forum questions concerning both the HP Test Fax Number and Fax connections. Going through Verizon doesn't seem to be an option at this point because we've had any number of "technicians" attending to problems relating to faxes in the past and they end up totally befuddled. Introducing any complexity is extraordinarily difficult for them.

Here is my problem: For a long time, we had a Brother fax machine with a built-in phone. I don't believe we ever had a problem either sending or receiving a fax. That fax machine stopped working so we replaced that one with an HP 6830 All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Fax machine that we have to this day. My sister was using the fax primarily for a home business.

Our setup has a certain degree of complexity. We have the 6830 machine with additional connections to an AT&T TAD 1740, and an old style landline telephone. We have two wall jacks and even there, the numbers that are written to the side of each (Verizon's doing) are just plain wrong. My sister's business telephone number that supposedly is on the left hand side is not. If it's connected to the right side, calling that number produces the desired results. So, the business number is connected to the right hand jack. Originally, I thought that we had a separate fax line but I really don't know whether that is the case?

Can anyone tell me whether the HP fax test number is working? Every time I supposedly send a fax to that number, it says that the recipient is busy. I also should tell everyone that I performed the HP internal fax test and everything passes. I really am not sure what to do next. We're spending good money for a fax line when we don't even know whether the fax is operational or even whether something is wrong with my connections. Any suggestions?

This is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that you want to know the fax number to test. I would like to help you resolve this issue.

If you do not have a fax number to test with, and you live in the US, HP has a fax test service you can use. The telephone number for this service is 1-888-HPFaxme (1-888-473-2963). The fax service receives faxes and returns faxes within 5 to 7 minutes to the number contained in the fax header.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.

I read your post and as I said in my original post, I've already tried that number. That's the thing here. There continues to be a busy signal aka the "recipient not responding," or something similar. Using this number hasn't helped any. Because of the busy signal, it's just made someone who wants to successfully resolve this issue into someone quite cranky at this time.

If anyone was in the midst of writing a response to my post, I apologize for any inconvenience because I just got our fax to work properly. The main problem was my present understanding of fax numbers and fax transmission with the same number. Our fax was used primarily by my sister in a home business. It harks back to an earlier time when she had two separate fax numbers. I, myself, seldom use faxes. With the knowledge that a fax number can be the same number as the voice number, I was able to solve the fax failure rather quickly. I had to change numbers, settings, and connections, but it was well worth it. After several days of fiddling around with the fax and becoming crankier by the second, I was finally able to preserve my sanity! Also last but not least, many thanks to the earlier poster in response to my original message. Oh and by the way, the HP Test Fax Number works fine.
