Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer

Using HP Smart Scanning at 4x6 format at 600DPI, with "Detect Edges" selected, the software gets progressivley slower as you get over the 50 mark and it has locked up twice when in the range of 100 scans. If you close and restart the software after about 40 scans you can keep working at a reasonable rate. It is slow to show the image and then slow to flip it 90 degrees. It saves the image without issue.

There must be a cashe or something that is not being cleared at the start of each scan. When it locks up, the CPU usage is "very high". I have version 155.1.1088.0

Hi @Meadowoods,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

The issue you're experiencing with the HP Smart app during high-volume scanning, where it progressively slows down and eventually locks up, is likely related to the accumulation of temporary data in the app's cache or memory. Here are some steps you can take to mitigate this issue:

1. Clear the Cache

  • Temporary Files and Cache: The HP Smart app may accumulate temporary files and data that can slow down performance over time. Unfortunately, there isn't a direct option to clear the cache within the HP Smart app itself, but you can try the following:
    • Restart the App: As you've noticed, restarting the app helps. This clears some of the accumulated data from the active session.
    • System Cleanup: Use your system’s disk cleanup utility to remove temporary files that may be contributing to the slowdown.

2. Monitor System Resources

  • CPU and Memory Usage: Since you mentioned high CPU usage, it's possible that your system's resources are being overwhelmed. Keep an eye on system performance (using Task Manager on Windows) while scanning, and if necessary, close other applications to free up resources.
  • Increase Virtual Memory: Consider increasing your system's virtual memory (paging file) to provide more resources for large tasks like high-volume scanning.

3. Lower the DPI or Change Scan Settings

  • DPI Settings: Scanning at 600 DPI, especially in high volumes, can be very resource-intensive. If possible, lower the DPI to 300 DPI or 150 DPI to reduce the load on the system.
  • Scan in Batches: If the scans aren't required to be continuous, try scanning in smaller batches and restarting the app after each batch to prevent it from slowing down.
  • Disable Edge Detection: Although "Detect Edges" is useful, it can increase processing time. Try scanning with this feature disabled to see if performance improves.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @Meadowoods,

Please find the remaining steps below.

5. Check System Specifications

  • Hardware Limitations: Ensure that your computer meets the recommended system requirements for running the HP Smart app, especially when performing high-volume tasks. Upgrading your RAM or switching to a system with a more powerful processor may help if your current setup is underpowered for the task.

6. Use Alternative Scanning Software

  • Try Another Program: If the issue persists, consider using different scanning software that might handle large volumes better, such as VueScan or the built-in Windows Fax and Scan utility. These programs may manage memory differently and could provide more stable performance for your needs.

These steps should help you manage the slowdowns and avoid lockups during large scanning tasks. If this does not help, contact the phone support.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
