Hi @Humbled12
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the scanning functionality on your HP ENVY Pro 6400 series printer! There are a few common reasons why the scan function might not be working, and I’ll guide you through troubleshooting to resolve it.
1. Check Printer Connection
First, ensure that your printer is properly connected to your computer (via Wi-Fi or USB).
Wireless Connection:
- Make sure that the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
- You can check this by printing a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s menu (via the control panel) to confirm the printer’s network status.
- If the printer isn’t connected to Wi-Fi, reconnect it through the printer’s Wireless settings menu.
USB Connection:
- If using USB, ensure that the cable is securely connected between the printer and the computer. Try using a different USB port if necessary.
2. Restart Printer and Computer
Sometimes, a simple restart can help clear any temporary glitches.
- Turn off the printer, wait 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Restart your computer to ensure that any software or driver issues are reset.
3. Update or Reinstall the Printer Drivers
The scan functionality may not work if the printer drivers are outdated or corrupted. Try updating or reinstalling the printer drivers.
- Updating Drivers:
- Go to the HP Support website and search for your printer model (HP ENVY Pro 6400 Series).
- Download and install the latest drivers for your operating system.
- Reinstalling Drivers:
- Uninstall the current drivers via Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
- After uninstalling, restart your computer and reinstall the printer software from the HP website or the original installation CD.
4. Check HP Smart App (For Wireless Scanning)
If you’re using the HP Smart app to scan, check the app to see if it recognizes the printer.
- Open the HP Smart app and check if your printer is listed.
- Try to scan directly from the HP Smart app to see if the issue is with the app or the printer.
- If you don’t have the app, you can download it from the Microsoft Store (for Windows) or App Store (for macOS).
5. Use Windows Scan Utility (If on Windows)
If you're on Windows, you can also try using the built-in Windows Scan app to see if the issue is specific to the scanning software you were using.
- Press Windows + S, search for Scan, and open the Windows Scan app.
- Select your printer and try scanning from there.
6. Check Printer's Scan Settings
Ensure that the scan functionality is enabled on the printer:
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Scan settings and check if everything is configured correctly. Make sure you can choose the destination (email, folder, etc.) and that your scanning settings match the desired resolution and format.
I hope this helps.
