Hi @Sparkyttu,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand that your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is connected to Wi-Fi, but it shows “cannot connect to Web Services” when trying to scan to email. I’ll walk you through the recommended steps to resolve this.
1. Restart all devices
- Turn OFF the printer
- Restart your Wi-Fi router
- Restart your computer or mobile device
- Turn the printer back ON
This clears temporary connection issues.
2. Verify network connection
- Ensure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network
- Avoid guest/public networks (Web Services may not work on them)
- Confirm the internet is working on other devices
3. Re-enable Web Services
On the printer control panel:
- Go to Setup / Web Services
- Select Disable Web Services, then enable it again
- Follow prompts to print the information page/claim code
If it fails, continue to next steps.
4. Update printer firmware
- Open the HP Smart app
- Check for printer updates/firmware updates
- Install any available updates
Outdated firmware can block the Web Services connection.
5. Check proxy or network restrictions
If you are using a work/school network:
- Proxy or firewall settings may block Web Services
- Try connecting the printer to a different network (like a mobile hotspot) to test
6. Use Embedded Web Server (Advanced)
- Print a network report to get the printer IP address
- Enter the IP in a browser
- Open Web Services tab → Enable
If the issue still persists
- Reset network settings on the printer and reconnect to Wi-Fi
- Or the issue could be related to network restrictions or service availability
