Hi - recently, when using my ADF to scan pages to a pdf, the pdf has 3 lines on the left side. If I just scan 1 page at a time without the ADF, no problem, so it is obviously nothing on the glass or the documents. please help

Even the finest bit of glue from a post it note is enough to refract the light and cause an error. Take the copy with the defect and lay it on the glass and it will show you where more cleaning is need. If you do not get lines when scanning from the flat glass then it is extremely unlikely that the scanner itself is the problem. 99% of these defects are dirt on the adf glass. We have found that a lot of the sanitizers people are using to clean office equipment leave streaks and marks that cause defects as well.

Try looking at this tutorial on cleaning the scanner glass: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-7640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/6617267/document/c0534...
You most likely have a few small pieces of paper sitting in the narrow strip window that is used when the ADF is employed. They should be located right where you are seeing the stripes.
