Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP LaserJet 3390 MFC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've uninstalled drivers and tried several install options, but on my latest Windows 10 64-bit machine, the 3390 will not show up under Scanners and Cameras while it has always worked fine on my first Win10 box. I am using the USB port (not Ethernet - that doesn't support scanning) and have tried both USB2.0 and 3.1. Printing is fine, but the scanner component is invisible n the new PC. I bought my first Win10 64-bit PC a few years ago, so the install occurred with an earlier version of Windows on that machine. Both machines are now up-to-date, according to Microsoft and scanning still works on the first machine.

The HP Print and Scan Doctor says that "The full software solution for your product is not installed...", and then points me to the drivers that I have already tried.

=> Is there a way to manually install or maybe copy the items from my other PC? When I go trough the "Add Device" flow in Scanners and Cameras, I only see a few Microsoft options and none of them produce anything in the scanners list. My first Win10 PC on the other hand lists several HP MFC's including the 3390.

Mostly unrelated: Incidentally, I only get AUTOMATIC 2-sided printing if I use the upd-pcl5-x64-6.1.0.20062 or upd-pcl6-x64-6.2.0.20412 driver versions - the current version (7.0.1.24923) limits the printer to 1-sided & manual 2-sided printing.

In any case, the scanner doesn't show up on my newer PC with any driver that I have tried, and I can't figure out how to manually add it, without any files to point to during that process.

Here is the process I used to install the drivers:
1) Device Manager -> Printers: Uninstall any instances of the 3390 (e.g. "HP Universal Printing PCL 6")
- Check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device" before clicking Uninstall
2) Remove instances of the 3390 from "Devices and Printers" (or "Printers and scanners")
3) Delete all "HP*" folders from C:\
4) Unplug the printer from the USB port
5) Reboot
6) Install this driver by running upd-pcl6-x64-6.2.0.20412.exe
- Choose the "USB mode - Plug and Play" option and leave both boxes checked
7) Plug the printer into the USB port
- Windows will automatically install and will work for scanning and 2-sided printing
- If Printers and scanners window is open, you can see the installation progress bar

Thanks for your time.

OK, I think I have gotten things to work, and I will share my findings below:

- I found scan driver here: https://www.driverscape.com/download/hp-laserjet-3390-scanner
   - Produces the identical driver details (& This device is working properly) in the new machine but still can't scan
      - Fails during "Establishing a connection...", then says "Could Not Complete Scan"
- This HP page (which is specific to my printer) has dead a link to drivers: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03501661
   - The page says NOT to use universal print drivers - in the end, I am sucessfully using the UPD for printing
      - Maybe if the link was not dead, it might be discovered that some better drivers exist that would make this posting moot
- The process I outline below follows this flow:
   1. Auto-install non-ideal printer driver automatically
   2. Manually install correct scanner driver
   3. Replace non-ideal printer driver with a better one

Here is the process in detail:

1. Plug in USB with no special drivers installed - Windows 10 will automatically install "HP Universal Printing PCL6" printer
   - Test the printer to make sure it works - it won't support double-sided printing, so this will later be removed
2. Install the scanner driver while the printer is still plugged into the USB port
   a. Launch Scanners and cameras by running control panel and searching for "scan"
      - "View scanners and cameras" will show up on the top left
   b. If the scanner (i.e. HP LaserJet 3390 Scanner) is present in Scanners and Cameras, skip to step 3, otherwise continue directly below
   c. Unzip the fad71f90e6c39557536888d482814eae.zip scanner driver into a new folder named C:\HP3390_scanner
      - This is the Win10 64-bit scan driver archive from the driverscape.com link above - file size is 184,533 bytes
   d. In the Scanners and Cameras window, choose "Add Device...", select "Have Disk...", and browse to the new folder
   e. Complete the installation process to install "HP LaserJet 3390 Scanner"
   f. Reboot (several times if necessary), and verify that the scanner works
      - Windows may take some time for the driver to become functional - as if Windows needs to just work things out
         - For whatever reason, it took quite some time (1 hour?) before I was able to get the scanner's Properties form to pop up from Printers and Cameras. I didn't do anything - just walked away for a bit.
      - In the end, I get 100% functionality using Windows Fax & Scan, including sheet feeder scanning
3. Remove the PRINTER (not the scanner!) and its drivers
   a. Device Manager -> Printers: Uninstall any instances of the 3390 (e.g. "HP Universal Printing PCL 6")

      - NOTE: Check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device" before clicking Uninstall
   b. Remove instances of the printer from "Devices and Printers" (or "Printers and scanners")
   c. Delete all residual HP printer driver folders (from previous installation attempts) from C:\ to make sure they don't get used by mistake
      - The scanner driver folder can be left in place for now, but it's no longer needed if the scanner is working
   d. Unplug the printer from the USB port - don't plug it back in until step 5 below
   e. Reboot the PC
4. Install the prefeerred printer driver by running upd-pcl5-x64-6.1.0.20062.exe (google the filename to find it on the web - it's 19,786,968 bytes in size)
   - I chose the PCL5 driver because that's what's been working on my other Win10-64 PC, though upd-pcl6-x64-6.2.0.20412.exe is a bit newer and also seems to work
      - Later versions don't allow automatic 2-sided printing.
   - Choose the "USB mode - Plug and Play" option and leave both boxes checked. Follow the process to completion and click "Finish" to complete the driver installation.
5. Plug the printer into the USB port
   - Windows will automatically install "HP LaserJet 3390 UPD PCL 5" which should support automatic 2-sided printing on the 3390
   - If a "Universal" HP printer is created, remove it - this happened to me and I just selected it and clicked "Remove"
   - You may have to remove the printers and unplug/replug the USB cable or even reboot for things to settle out - I don't know why.
   - Final configuration should be one scanner "HP LaserJet 3390 Scanner" and one printer "HP LaserJet 3390 UPD PCL 5" - nothing extra.

Incidentally, I am having pretty good success SHARING this USB printer/scanner over ethernet between my two Win10 boxes, via a Silex SX-DS-4000U2 (2x USB2.0 to gigbit Ethernet USB device server). The biggest hitch is that auto-connect-on-print does not work - you have to connect it manually by double-clicking on it in SX Virtual Link. Somehow, scanning actually seems faster.
