LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everybody!

I recently purchased a LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw. However, I cannot get the scan (or fax) to email or network to work.

To network:

As network folders I have tried  a D-Link NAS D-320 by using the address I use for windows integration (\\NAS-IP\volume_2\scan) and both admin//pw and a specific user HP//pw with read/wright access. Then I have tried a USB-stick plugged into a FritzBox again using the address used for Windows integration and various user//pw settings. If I use the test button it says:

"Der Drucker kann keine Verbindung zum entfernten Ziel herstellen. Überprüfen Sie Ihre Konfigurationen und versuchen Sie es erneut." which means printer cannot connect to folder. check your configuration and try again.

Both the NAS and the FritzBox should support SMB1.

to email:

I have reentered/checked the email account setting at least 10 times and even created a new email account. I tried with / without TSS/SSL and changed the ports. If I test the settings it says:

"Falsche Anmeldedaten. Benutzernamen/Kennwort überprüfen und erneut versuchen." which means incorrect login data. Verify username/password and try again.

However, using the exact same login data, port etc. for the email-alert feature, everything works fine - I get the test email sent from the account.

Thanks in advance

Michael

I can offer little in the way of actual help - our printers are vastly different animals (mine is an Officejet Pro 9025) and I would guess we do not have much in common on the network side.

Know that I am frightfully ignorant on the subject of Laser Printers - and if I mis-step again here, we will likely hear from one of our Experts with a correction.  Not a problem on my side - eventually I might learn to stay away from questions about these printers.  Smiling.

One more Caveat:

The Embedded Web Server (EWS) as shown in the examples is quite different visually and possibly in function from that on your Laser Printer.  The only intention of the examples (included below) is to provide some measure of visibility on the subject.

Observations

Scan to Network Folder - NAS

The only way this works - and has ever worked - for me is to use the simplest setup from printer to NAS:

IP Address only plus the path - each folder (directory) in the path hierarchy, (after the volume, of course), regardless of owner, must be in group "Everyone".

Example

9025_EWS_Scan-to-Network-Folder_19025_EWS_Scan-to-Network-Folder_1

\\192.168.1.12\Data\Scan_Folder

On the NAS

Folder:  Data

Owned by admin (or other Linux or admin user)

Group = Everyone

Subfolder:  Scan_Folder

Owned by local user account, for example Dragon

Group = Everyone

Mount point on Windows computer

Map_Network_Drive_1Map_Network_Drive_1

Interestingly,  although the NAS account folder (on the NAS) is owned by the local NAS user "Dragon", the password to access that account from the Windows side might be that of the Microsoft account on the computer on which the NAS is mapped.  It just depends on how the accounts are managed.  Ignore this if it seems out-of-place.

Worth a couple of minutes, perhaps to double check on the NAS side.  The only other time I have seen odd issues is when the NAS needs a maintenance (disk check / cleaning).  Odd Firmware updates do not usually impact access points or folders (directories).

Except...

One time, a while ago (not recently) when I could not get anything to cooperate in spite of "having done it all correctly", I did end up logging into the NAS and updating the "Everyone" group entries.  Essentially, I changed the account group, waited a few minutes, set everything back into place (added / changed the Group back to "Everyone".  Magic.  I dug at that for a long time and I never did find out why the NAS was stubborn about the setup.

Scan to Email

Scan to Email setup involves some of the same restrictions as found in other "to Email" activities that use the printer as the intermediary.  At this writing, for example, two-step verification is not supported, though there is evidence that the use of the App Password setting does alleviate (correct) the issue.

In spite of the TLS note in the second example, this will all likely work on Port 465.  If it does not, try restarting everything (well, at least the printer), wait a few minutes (or as long as you can stand it) and try the setup again.

Example - Email Alerts

9025_EWS_Email_Alerts_Email_Server9025_EWS_Email_Alerts_Email_Server

Example - Officejet Pro 8740 (an older Officejet Pro similar in features to the 9025) - Scan to Email

EWS_8740_Scan-to-Email_Setup_6EWS_8740_Scan-to-Email_Setup_6

What else?

If I think of anything substantive (useful in context), I will update my post.

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, none of the solutions works.

Regarding network: I tested from my mobile to access the NAS and it works fine without any password. The access is set to "everybody".

Regarding email: I understand that of course the setup must be complete to work. However, (a) I think I have entered everything and (b) there is no explanation why the printer accepts the email setting for email-alerts and can send the test email and at the same time suggests the exact same login data is incorrect when trying to use it for fax/scan.

You are welcome.

It is good that everything checks out, of course.

Another of our Experts might be able to add something useful.

If you have not done so, try restarting everything, including the router.  This is not quite the "desperate" attempt that it sounds - sometimes it is helpful to reboot the lot.  After the devices are restarted, check to see that Web Services is running on the printer (should be fine).

If I have anything else to suggest, I will post back.

Thanks again for your support. A reboot of all devices hasn't solved the problem either. However, now the touchscreen of the printer shows stripes and fading. The printer will go back to Amazon and will likely be my last hp product.
