I have an HP Laserjet Pro MFP M428fdw which has a line on all copies and scans when the ADF is used.
I read through all the support cases and they instruct you to clean the glass (99% cause of the issue).
I cleaned the glass used by the ADF and all areas along the line but the line is still there.
Does anyone know how to fix the lonely 1%.
Thanks.

Hi @Tbilton,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you've already cleaned the glass used by the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and the issue persists, there are a few additional steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.
Clean the ADF Rollers:
- The rollers in the ADF can accumulate dust and debris over time, leading to print or scan quality issues. Gently clean the rollers with a soft, lint-free cloth and a mild solution (such as isopropyl alcohol). Ensure that the rollers are dry before using the ADF again.
Check for Foreign Objects:
- Inspect the ADF area for any foreign objects, such as bits of paper or other debris, that may be causing the line. Even a small obstruction can impact the scanning process.
Update Firmware/Drivers:
- Ensure that your printer's firmware and drivers are up to date. HP often releases updates that can address performance and printing issues. Visit the HP support website to download the latest firmware and drivers for your LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw.
Perform a Calibration or Cleaning Cycle:
- Some printers have calibration or cleaning cycles that can be initiated from the control panel or through the printer software. Check your printer's user manual for instructions on how to perform these cycles.
Reset the Printer:
- Power off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in, power it on, and check if the issue persists. This can sometimes clear temporary glitches.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

If you only get the mark when using the ADF then the issue is with either the glass or the mylar cover on the glass. If the scanner itself were bad you would have lines when scanning from the flat glass as well.
The mylar strip can become damaged and even a minor scratch can cause light scattering that creates a defect. That strip can be easily replaced. Part number B3Q10-00060
