Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Officejet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Printer software/firmware was updated last week. Today I tried to scan some documents to my laptop and the HP Printer Assistant software that I have used for the last couple of years indicated that it could not communicate with the printer after the scan was completed ( printer scanned the document but no image appeared in the scan software. Ran the HP Doctor program to resolve the issue and it indicated a problem with the driver for the scan function was not communicating with the printer. I can no longer find the HP Printer Assistant software on HP's software website so I assume that it is not supported on the HP 8710.

I tried using the HP Smart software to complete the scan. Once the Smart software was updated to the current version the scan function works just fine. However, there does not appear to be an option in the Smart software to rotate the scanned images once they have been scanned. This is a major problem when scanning multipage documents where some pages are landscape and some pages are not.

I either need a fix for the HP Printer Assistant so that the driver works, a fix for the HP Smart software so I can rotate the scanned image for each page scanned (Smart software is not so smart), or a way to go back to previous version of the software/firmware that was on my HP 8710 printer.

You will notice there are numerous posts in the community pages about scan problems in the last couple of days. I suspect they may be related.

Found the solution in the HP Smart program. Actually the Smart program is smarter than I gave it credit for. When you select the auto-orientation feature on the edit page it will rotate the image after you run the scan under the "SCAN" button, but not when you select the "PREVIEW" button. Once you have completed the actual scan you will be given some options if you click on the Blue dot on the corner of the scanned page that has the ellipsis (three dots) in it. One of the options is to edit the completed scanned page and among the edit options is an option to rotate the page. This action can be done on a page-by-page basis.

It is too bad that the software does not seem to have better instructions to guide the user, but after several hours of research and experimentation with the software I have solved my own problem.
