HP OfficeJet Pro 6970
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When scanning using the document feeder the paper gets about halfway through and the machine starts making a very loud machine gun like noise.  It doesn't happen every time but maybe every other time that I scan.   Printing is fine.

The quality of the scanning is fine.

@nanc220

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand the printer is creating a loud noise at times during a scan is in process,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you check the quality of the paper?

Clean the ADF rollers on the printer?

While you respond to that, here's a few things you can do:

Step 1: Check the condition of the paper and reload it

Remove the paper from the ADF and make sure that the paper is clean, doesn’t have staples or labels, is undamaged and in good condition, and then reload the paper into the ADF. The type and condition of paper can affect the way the ADF picks paper.

Step 2: Clean the ADF pick rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the pick rollers and cause paper feed issues. To help prevent paper feed issues, clean the rollers inside the ADF.

Step 3: Reset the printer

Follow these steps to reset the printer.

  1. Without turning the printer off, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  2. Wait 30 seconds, and then reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  3. Press the power button to turn on the printer, if it did not power on automatically.

    • If the ADF picked the paper, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

    • If the ADF did not pick the paper, continue to the next solution step

Hi. I'm having the same problem - it started a few weeks ago. I cleaned everything as instructed and then went on vacation for two weeks. I have returned today to find that the same problem exists. Please help, as I have a lot of scanning to do and it's just not possible with the machine in this condition.

Hi @Jonathan_LL,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query. I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you are facing issues with your HP Photosmart Premium Fax e-All-in-One Printer  - C410 wherein it makes a loud noise while scanning.

This issue could occur if there is any obstruction in the paper path or the ADF rollers may not be working properly.

Let's go through a few steps that may help to fix this issue.

And here are a few steps in the link: Use Diagnose & Fix in HP Smart to repair common printing issues (Windows, macOS)

Let me know how this works.

You have a good day ahead.

Hi. Thanks for replying.

Sorry, I've made an error. My printer is actually the Officejet Pro X576. The issue is with the ADF. I've checked your tutorials already and I've tried everything in terms of cleaning and moving the green tab, but nothing works.

Is there any further assistance that you can offer, please? Scanning is giving me a headache!

Hi @Jonathan_LL,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!

I understand you are having issues with the printer making loud noise while scanning on your HP Printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Could you provide me with the exact model number of the printer? Please use this link to find this information: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Have you checked for any obstructions inside the printer?

Are you able to move the carriage manually?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to check for the latest firmware update if available for your printer, using this website.

Please respond to this post with the details of the product, Operating system and with the results of the troubleshooting for further assistance.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world

Thank you for getting back to me.

The model number is Officejet Pro X576dw MFP.

I have checked for obstructions and I have cleaned the device as instructed. It seems that the only way to stop the noise and ensure that the paper is properly taken into the ADF is to put pressure on top of the ADF. This suggests to me that there is something wrong with the internal mechanism, but I'm not an expert, hence this request for help!
