Tried everything I can think of but the printer will not connect to any outgoing mail server on any of my accounts.  Tried apps passwords, ports 465 and 587 and it just fails.  I'm beginning to suspect old TLS but there is no way to forcae a different version on this model printer.  Any suggestions?

A little more detail.  This feature worked fine until a few weeks ago.  All othr funtions on the printer are working.  I've updated the firmware.  Tried 3 separate email account s all with app passwords, all with different smtp servers. Tried ports 465 and 587 (587 was what had been working)  Have checked firewall setting to make sure ports aren't blocked.( can send mail through all of the smtp servers from a mail client on my laptop).  I can't find any documentation that confirms the specs for the printer but it used to support port 587 so what changed?

Hi @Soxgirlva ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand based on your detailed description, it seems likely that the issue may indeed be related to TLS (Transport Layer Security) version compatibility. Many email service providers have recently deprecated older TLS versions (e.g., TLS 1.0 and 1.1) in favor of more secure versions like TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3. If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277 does not support the newer TLS versions, it will be unable to connect to modern SMTP servers.

Here’s a troubleshooting plan and some potential solutions:

1. Confirm TLS Compatibility

  • Check your printer's firmware release notes or documentation to confirm the TLS version it supports.
  • If TLS 1.2 is not supported, unfortunately, there may not be a direct way to force an upgrade on this older printer model.

2. Test a Local SMTP Relay

  • If the printer does not support modern TLS, set up a local SMTP relay server that accepts non-secure connections and forwards the emails securely to the SMTP server.
  • Tools like Postfix (Linux) or hMailServer (Windows) can act as this relay.
  • Configure the relay to accept connections from the printer and use TLS 1.2+ to communicate with the external SMTP server.

3. Validate Printer Settings

  • SMTP Server Address: Double-check the server address (e.g., smtp.gmail.com for Gmail, smtp.office365.com for Microsoft).
  • Ports: Ensure that port 587 (STARTTLS) and 465 (SSL/TLS) are correctly specified.
  • Authentication: Verify that the username and app password are entered correctly (watch for typos or character encoding issues).

4. Reset Email Configuration

  • On the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS), reset the email settings to defaults and reconfigure them from scratch. This can resolve any hidden configuration glitches.

5. Check Firewall and Network Settings

  • Even though you’ve verified ports aren’t blocked, try placing the printer in a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) temporarily to eliminate any subtle firewall issues.
  • Ensure that the printer has unrestricted outbound access to the internet.

6. Alternative Email Services

  • Some email providers allow non-secure connections from trusted devices (though this is rare). For example, Gmail’s “Allow less secure apps” option has been retired, but other providers may still have similar allowances.
  • Test with an older or simpler email provider as a temporary workaround.

7. Consider Upgrading

  • If all else fails and email functionality is critical for you, upgrading to a newer printer model with guaranteed TLS 1.2/1.3 support might be the only long-term solution.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

this is somewhat helpful but I have been unable to locate any HP documentation of the printer that can establish which version of TLS the model supports.  I cannot find the firmware release notes either.  There is a firmware download but no supporting release notes so I am dead at step one.
