M283 fax is slow - is this normal?

When I fax a document, it takes a long time for the printer to fax. Is there some reason? I can say that it tests fine - ie, a good phone connection is available. Any other things I should check? While wating at the "Fax Status" window it says "processing..." and once in a while it shows "Busy".  No one is printing at the time. No one is using the phone at the time. I have found it has taken several hours until the fax actually is sent. Why?

The busy notice while trying to fax suggests that the phone line is busy. Is this the only device on the line? Is this an actual analog line or a line supplied by your internet provider (VOIP line)? What speed to you have the modem set at? How many pages is the document and how dense is the print coverage (10 being completely black pages-1 being 1 line of text)?

The house phone is rarely used. And we do not get many incoming calls, except for the spam, but there is sufficient time between calls to make a connection.

Using Xfinity system.

I do not know where to set the fax speed. Got a better app I should use when faxing? I am using the HP driver that is part of the printer package.

When faxes do get sent, a 2 to 4 page fax takes around a minute, when looking at past connections.

All settings are default as far as I know.

Did you see my reply? The house phone is not in use when I fax and the printer is the only active device on the phone line. It still takes house for a fax to go through. I have even faxed to a number that was not busy and it took a long time for the fax to complete.
