My MFP 179 fnw scanner made a loud 'ratcheting' noise when activating a scan then i get scanner failure and nothing happens. I have reset via power down and restart but same problem. Sounds like something is jamming on scanner. Printer still work OK. Any suggestions?

Hi @Bren48,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like there might be a mechanical issue with the scanner mechanism itself. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.
- Inspect for Obstructions: Turn off the printer and open the scanner lid. Check for any obstructions such as paper scraps, dust, or foreign objects that may be causing the scanner to jam. If you find anything, carefully remove it.
- Check Scanner Head: Look for any visible damage to the scanner head or its surroundings. Sometimes a misalignment or damage to the scanner head can cause loud noises and scanner failures.
- Reset Scanner: Sometimes, resetting the scanner to its default settings can resolve temporary issues. Refer to the printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a scanner reset.
- Update Drivers and Firmware: Ensure that your printer's drivers and firmware are up to date. Sometimes, outdated software can cause compatibility issues or malfunctions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
