This may be a foolish question but my flatbed MFP scanner lid is squeaking every time I lift it and bring it down. It seems a little tight when lifting as well.
Any suggestions for what I can do to repair this issue?
I'm sure HP doesn't recommend any type of lubricant or do they?

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
No, it is definitely not a foolish question -and there are no foolish or dumb questions, only questions that aren't asked!
The squeaking and tightness when lifting the flatbed scanner lid is usually caused by friction, and it can often be fixed with a few simple adjustments. Here are a few steps how I would address it:
1. Inspect the Hinges and Edges:
Check if there’s any dirt, dust, or debris around the hinges or edges of the scanner lid. Sometimes small particles can cause friction and squeaking.
Clean the area gently with a soft cloth to remove any buildup.
2. Lubrication (Light Application) :
HP typically doesn’t recommend lubricating the scanner lid directly, as it can cause long-term issues or attract more dust. However, a light application of silicone-based lubricant (definitely NOT WD-40 or oils) on the hinges and moving parts can help reduce squeaks and improve the lid’s movement. Just apply a very small amount and wipe away any excess with a cloth to avoid it getting on the glass or other parts.
3. Check the Lid’s Alignment:
If the lid is tight, it could be misaligned. Gently adjust the lid to ensure it is sitting properly on the hinges. If it seems to be off-center or doesn’t sit properly when closed, that could be contributing to the issue.
4. Monitor for Over-tightened Screws:
If the tightness persists, check if any screws around the scanner lid or hinges are too tight. Loosening them slightly (if safe to do so) might alleviate the tension causing the squeaking.
5. Check for Warranty:
If the squeaking and tightness persist and you suspect it’s a hardware defect, check whether your printer is still under warranty. HP may offer a replacement or repair if it's a manufacturing issue.
I hope one of these solutions works out for you!
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Kind Regards,
