Hi - Thanks

My Pro MFP M177fw prints fine. Just put in a new b&w catridge. When I use it as a copier - B&W only - the output is so faded...something's up.

@DavidBonjour, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw prints fine, but when using the copier function in B&W, the output appears faded, even after installing a new black cartridge. Let's walk through a few steps to troubleshoot and resolve this:

Check Scanner Glass and ADF

Since copying uses the scanner, any dust or smudges on the scanner glass or automatic document feeder (ADF) can affect output quality.

  • Clean the scanner glass, white backing strip, and ADF rollers using a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner.

Check Copy Settings

Ensure the copy contrast or light/dark setting isn’t set too light.

  • On the printer control panel:
    • Tap Copy > Settings > Lighter/Darker
    • Adjust the setting toward Darker
    • Try copying again

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.

Perform a Copy Test

Try copying a high-contrast document (like a bold printed page) to see if the issue persists. If the print quality is still faded only when copying (but not printing), it’s likely a scanner-related issue rather than toner.

Reset the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset can help:

  1. Turn off the printer
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall and printer
  3. Wait 60 seconds
  4. Plug it back in and power on

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
