Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

How long should we wait until getting a working solution?

I believe another way to articulate this problem is this:   (This is the behavior of my MFP M477)

Once I start creating files with a particular prefix, scan0001, scan0002, scan0003, etc, I would like the printer to keep track of the sequence number and keep incrementing.  Currently, it only looks at the file names that exist in the folder and increments after whatever the last number is.

My problem is that I pick up the files from this folder and put them into other folders.  I will certainly have duplicate file names as I move these files away from my scanner folder and the numbering starts over.

My old L7780 OfficeJet kept track of the sequence number and kept incrementing, even after I cleaned the folder out.

Can we go back to that old functionality - where the sequence number after the prefix is persistent and keeps incrementing?

Thanks!

I believe the prefix is case sensitive.  If you use Scan instead of scan I think it will start working by adding the prefixes.  I also think if there was anything already in the folder when you set up the scan to network folder option that it didn't work either, so try clearing that folder of all files first.

I actually fixed this myself by renaming the prefix.  Once I did this the numeric suffix started to appear with the 2nd and subsequent scans.

Clearly a bug as if you leave the prefix as it's default, no suffix is appended and it just overwrites the previous scan.

Could someone remove the "solved" tag to that post ? This "'trick" do not work for everyone.

Why you use "I believe" and "I think", have you tested it ?

BTW, for me it still doesnt work, using "Scan" as prefix always produce the same file "Scan.pdf", no auto numbering. same for "scan" (lowercase) and  for all other prefixes I've tried

I don't beleive that issue hasn't be solved yet!

Because for me and for some reason when I did that the behavior changed from overwriting the scan to adding it and appending a suffix.

I also have it saving to a dropbox folder which may have been an issue?

This topic is about saving to a Windows folder (AKA network share), not related to dropbox.

Correct, I understand. I set up the network share to save in a local Dropbox folder on a windows machine. I only add that detail in case that might be a factor.

This is undersrandiy frustrating and took me days to resolve.

In that case, as long as printer software is concerned, this is a regular network share then.

BTW that issue happens on other HP models too:

Prefix function does not work for network folder scans on MFP M426fdw

Another thing I did was make sure that in the shared folder I set permissions so that “Anyone” can read, write, or change a file in that folder.  Just another variable in my solution.
