You would think so, I agree.

Ironically I own both of the printer models having this issue.

Donyiu have the permissions set to read/write/change on your shared folder and have you put that username and password in the scan to network folder settings on your printer configuration?

My problem is solved and has been for months.  Your problem may be different. I do wish people would stop resurrecting this old post!

Another thing I did was make sure that in the shared folder I set permissions so that “Anyone” can read, write, or change a file in that folder.  Just another variable in my solution.

It was already set to full read/write/change access for the user account set up to connect to the share.

I just changed this to "full access", no change.

BTW meantime I've activated SMB transfer logs on the target device (a Synology NAS BTW)

When looking at the logs I can see that the printer doesn't even try to create a file with the prefix followed by a sequence number. It don't even try to browse the share (to get the name of existing files). Simply always  directly create a file named "<prefix>.pdf".

Sure: it won't even be able to create a file on the share if it was set like that.

Another guy in the same boat:

His 1st solution had been to downgrade firmware (can't be a working solution for me since I need SMB2). Later he bought another model (replaced M425dw by a M477fdw) not acceptable solution for me either.

If it can help, my printer current Firmware  has datecode: 20180205. Latest available.

I wonder if you make the first Scan.pdf (or whatever prefix) read-only, what the scanner behavior would be when you try and scan your next document?

You can go up to your username, down to My Subcriptions, then Notification Settings and stop receiving notifications when this post is replied to so you don't get annoyed.  This is definitely a bug as I've experienced it on 2 different HP machines, and the more input the more likely we might be able to narrow down what causes it for future users.

A "write error" message is displayed on the printer lcd screen.

Strangely the message is about the *folder* even I've only set readonly on the *file*

As soon as I rename the Scan.pdf file it starts again with the same behaviour described in sooner in this thread.

Is your printer connected to your network w/ WIFI or hard-wired ethernet?  Same with the PC, is it hard-wired or WIFI?   I don't knwo why it might make a difference, would be worth eliminating the WIFI if that's the case and trying then?  I'm just throwing darts here, but these are things I tried.

Incidently, I just switched the printer from wired connection to WiFi today, during my investigation about this issue.

The NAS were the shared folder is located is using Ethernet and doesn't have WiFi interface built-in.

That didn't made any change to the problem.

I also want to point out that this auto increment stuff used to work initially. Stopped working apparently after a printer firmware upgrade.
