After who knows how long, this is now working for me. Here's what I did (not very scientific):

1. Updated the firmware (there should be an early 2019 update)

2. Remove the printer, add it back

3. Set up my shared folder on the desktop, made sure permissions were set to 'read & write' for all users

4. This is the step that seems to have made the difference for me. In system preferences-->sharing, I clicked 'Options' , clicked 'share files and folders using SMB' and made sure (this is the new part) that under 'Windows File Sharing:' my account is checked off (will require password entry). 

 

Hope this helps those of you who have held out this long!

Thanks ADR1974! I returned my M477fdn while I was still in the return window.  Can anyone else confirm that the Jan 31, 2019 firmware update included a fix for this issue?
