Hi @Pip75,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP Photosmart 309a printer can print but not scan, it often points to a communication issue between the printer and your computer or device.

Here are steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the scanning issue.

Check Connection and Power:

  • Ensure that your printer is powered on and properly connected to your computer or network.
  • If using a USB connection, verify that the USB cable is securely plugged into both the printer and your computer.
  • For network-connected printers, ensure that the printer is connected to the same network as your computer and that the network connection is stable.

Restart Devices:

  • Restart both your printer and your computer to refresh their connection and clear any temporary issues.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the HP website. This tool can diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems automatically.

Check Printer Settings:

  • On your computer, open the HP printer software or HP Smart app (if installed).
  • Check the settings to ensure that the printer is set as the default scanning device and that there are no errors or alerts shown.

Driver Update:

  • Ensure that you have the latest drivers and software installed for your printer. Visit the HP website, enter your printer model (Photosmart 309a), and download the latest drivers if necessary.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Sometimes, other installed software or security programs can interfere with scanning operations. Temporarily disable any firewall or security software and try scanning again.

Scan from Control Panel (Windows):

  • If you're using Windows, try scanning directly from the Windows Control Panel. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, locate your printer, right-click on it, and select "Start scan."

Check Scanner Settings:

  • Ensure that the scanner settings on your computer are correctly configured. Make sure the correct scanner is selected and settings like resolution and file type are appropriate.

Reset Printer:

  • As a last resort, you can try resetting your printer to its default settings. Consult your printer's manual or HP support website for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with the scanner component of your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
