Hi @BillM16,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 5540 printer is able to print but is not able to scan or copy documents, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check Connections

  • Ensure that the printer is connected to your computer or network (if using Wi-Fi).
  • If you're using a USB connection, make sure the cable is securely plugged in.

2. Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can clear temporary glitches.

3. Update Printer Software

  • Make sure you have the latest software and drivers installed for your printer. You can download the latest version from the HP Support website.

4. Check Scanner Settings

  • On your computer, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, and select See what's printing. Ensure that the printer is set as the default device.
  • Use the HP Smart app or HP Scan software to initiate the scan and check settings.

5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool, which can diagnose and fix common printing and scanning issues.

6. Check for Error Messages

  • Look at the printer’s display panel for any error messages or warning lights. Address any issues indicated there.

7. Check the Scanner Glass

  • Make sure the scanner glass is clean and free of debris, as dirt or fingerprints can interfere with scanning.

8. Reset the Printing System (Mac Only)

  • If you're using a Mac, you can try resetting the printing system:
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Right-click (or Control-click) in the Printers list and choose Reset printing system. Then, re-add your printer..

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
