My HP Envy 5012 is offline and I cannot get it to go online

I have an Envy 5012 that I got a year ago. Pretty much after I set it up it said online. Within a few minutes it said offline and I could never get it back to being online. This has hindered me from being able to scan documents from my printer to my computer and I cannot seem to get it online no matter what I do. I am a college student and this is something that I rather important to ensure that I have documents so they do not get lost. If anyone has any idea of what to do or how I can fix this please let me know. My printer is out of warranty so I don't have any more options.

Are you trying to connect the printer to a open/guest network?

Printers may not work on such networks. You need to have a wireless router or a secure network.

If you do not have access to a wireless router, you may connect the printer and the MAC using Wifi-direct. However, there will be no internet access on the computer while using wifi-direct.

Kindly refer to this document to know how to connect the printer via wifi-direct - Printing with Wi-Fi Direct. The default password is 12345678.

If you have a wireless router, restart the wireless router, the printer, and the MAC

On the printer screen, go to Setup > Network Setup > Restore network settings

Go back to Network > Wireless > Wireless setup wizard and select your network.

• Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
• This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the MAC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
• If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
• Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.
• The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.

Update the printer firmware

Go to Setup > Tools > Update the printer

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

You may install the printer using AirPrint driver as shown in this document - Printing with Apple AirPrint

So the wifi I am connected to on both my laptop and my printer is the school wifi. Which is open to all. Would I have to get my own private router in order to connect?

Guest or public networks (such as networks found in apartments, coffee shops, schools, or hotels) have additional security features that can prevent printing.

To print, directly connect your computer or mobile device to your printer with Wi-Fi Direct.

Wi-Fi direct is a method that connects your printer directly to your phone or computer using default or an assigned password, the drawback of this type of connection is that you will not be able to access the internet and print at the same time.  
 

For more information, go to Wi-Fi Direct Printer Setup.or get your own private network or use a USB cable to connect between the printer and

computer.
