Officejet 6700
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and older

My Officejet 6700 will print but will not copy. When I try to copy, a red "X" shows up to the right of the touchscreen. There is no other explanation. I've tried rebooting and cleaning but nothing works. Does anybody have a suggestion to enable me to use the copy function?

@ArlenG, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to make copies on the printer. Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

If this does not help, unplug the power cable and hold the power button down for 10-15 seconds and release it. Power on the printer and check.

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

If the scanner light does not move or moves halfway or is not lit, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken.

In this case, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options for your printer.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.

Thank you for responding. Unfortunately I've tried all of these steps without success. I'm wondering about the red "X" to the right of the touchscreen when I hit the copy button.  Is that unusual? Does that give any help diagnosing the problem? Is there anything more I can do?

@ArlenG

The red X denotes an error. Does the scanner bar lit up and move?

If you have tried the steps and the issue persists, you may have to contact the HP Support team for assistance as it could be a hardware failure.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Thank you for responding to having a red "X' on my touch screen when I try to copy. One more question: If I need to update my driver and/or firmware, am I allowed to do so if my warranty has expired? I don't seem to be able to download an upgrade.
