Hi @MrBrewski,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP DeskJet 4258e All-in-One displays an error when you select the Scan icon, the issue is usually caused by a temporary printer communication problem, corrupted HP Smart software, or an outdated scanner driver—not necessarily a hardware failure.

Step 1: Restart the Printer

A power reset clears temporary scanner errors.

  1. Keep the printer turned on.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.

  3. Wait 60 seconds, then reconnect the power and turn the printer back on.

  4. Try scanning again.

Step 2: Test the Scanner Using Built-in Tools

This helps determine whether the issue is with the HP app or the scanner itself.

  • Windows: Open the Windows Scan app and select New Scan.

  • Mac: Open Image Capture, select your HP DeskJet 4258e, and click Scan.

If scanning works, the HP software likely needs to be reinstalled.

Step 3: Reinstall the HP Software

Reinstalling the latest software refreshes the scanner drivers and resolves most software-related scan errors.

  1. Uninstall your HP printer software from your computer.

  2. Restart the computer.

  3. Download and install the latest software for your printer from 123.hp.com.

  4. Set up the printer again and test scanning.

I hope this helps resolve the scanning issue. If the problem continues, let us know the exact error message you see and whether you're using Windows or macOS so we can assist further.

Take care and have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
