Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an Officejet Pro 6978; when I attempt to scan to my computer and place documents in the document feeder, the scanner only scans from the deck glass and the document feeder does not respond at all.  The copy function does pull from the document feeder but not when using the scanner.  Please help.

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet 6978 Printer. I understand that it wont pickup paper from ADF and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well.

Clean the paper feed rollers and separator pad in the ADF.

  1. Remove the originals from the ADF.

  2. Lift the cover of the ADF.

  3. Check for obstructions inside the ADF. Make sure nothing blocks the paper from engaging with the rollers. Even small pieces of paper can cause paper feed issues.

  4. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  5. Press the cloth against the rollers, and then rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

  6. Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).

  7. Close the ADF cover tightly at both ends.

  8. Try to print.

Reset the printer.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

       NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

  10. try to print.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.
