My printer lets me print remotely but isn't letting me scan remotely from the scanner. I get an error screen that says "scanning was unsuccessful" try again. I've tried everything: restarting the printer, updating the software, etc. Nothing works. What's the problem?

Hi @AboveEnvy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding remote scanning issues on the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Verify Network Connection:

  • Ensure that the printer and computer are connected to the same network. Verify network stability and that there are no connectivity issues.

Check Scan Settings:

  • Open the HP Software or HP Smart app to check that your scanning preferences and settings are correctly configured.

Firewall or Antivirus:

  • Temporarily disable your firewall or antivirus software to see if it is blocking the scanning function. If scanning works, add the HP software or device to the exceptions list.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. It can diagnose and fix many problems remotely related to scanning.

Update or Reinstall Drivers:

  • Ensure you have the latest scanner drivers and software installed. If not, download them from the HP Support website and reinstall.

Use Windows Fax and Scan or Another App:

  • Try using Windows Fax and Scan or a different scanning application to determine if the issue is software-specific.

Check Printer's EWS (Embedded Web Server):

  • Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server via its IP address in a web browser. Ensure that Webscan is enabled in the Scan tab settings.

Windows Services:

  • Make sure that the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is running. You can check this by searching for "Services" in Windows, finding WIA, and ensuring it’s set to "Automatic".

Normalize Scan to Computer Function:

  • Ensure the "Scan to Computer" feature is active. This can sometimes deactivate after printer resets or software updates. Reactivate it in the HP Software.

USB Connection Test:

  • If scanning still fails remotely, try connecting the printer directly to your computer via USB to see if it scans successfully locally.

I hope this helps.
