Am trying to send faxes on my HP envy7640 but the receiver's device does not pick up and I receive a "no answer" result.  This has happened with different recipient fax numbers but they all seem to be using systems that do not use fax devices but receive the faxes direct to email.  How do I send faxes to these recipients from my phone based HP fax system.

Hi @Mariannekoz1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Sending faxes to recipients using direct-to-email fax systems can sometimes be tricky, especially if your HP Envy 7640 is encountering issues. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and successfully send faxes to email-based systems:

1. Verify Fax Number Format

  • Check Format: Ensure that the fax number you are dialing is correct and in the proper format. For email-based systems, make sure you are not including extra characters or spaces.

2. Confirm Recipient's Fax System Details

  • Recipient’s Instructions: Verify the instructions provided by the recipient’s fax service. Some direct-to-email fax systems might have specific requirements or settings that need to be followed.
  • Fax Number vs. Email Address: Confirm whether you should be sending the fax to a traditional fax number or an email address. Some systems require you to send faxes to a specific number that is set up to forward to email.

3. Check Your Fax Settings

Confirm Fax Settings:

  • On the HP Envy 7640, go to Fax settings and ensure that all configurations are correct.
  • Check the fax header and cover page settings, as incorrect settings might cause issues.

Adjust Fax Speed and Resolution:

  • Sometimes, reducing the fax speed or resolution can help with connectivity issues. Lower the fax speed and/or resolution settings in the Fax Setup menu.

4. Test Your Fax Machine

  • Test Fax Line: Try sending a test fax to a traditional fax number to confirm that your fax machine is functioning correctly.
  • Alternative Fax Numbers: Test sending faxes to other known fax numbers to rule out issues with your machine.

5. Check Fax Line Connection

  • Phone Line: Ensure that the fax machine is properly connected to the phone line and that the line is not experiencing any issues.
  • Remove Splitters: If you are using a phone line splitter, try connecting the fax machine directly to the phone jack.

6. Use the HP Smart App

  • HP Smart App: If available, use the HP Smart app to send faxes. Sometimes the app can provide additional troubleshooting options and confirm successful sending.

7. Contact Fax Service Provider

  • Recipient’s Provider: Contact the recipient’s fax service provider to confirm that there are no issues with their service and that they can receive faxes properly.
  • Check Fax Number Validity: Verify with the recipient that the fax number you are using is correct and properly configured for their fax-to-email system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
