Inadvertently deleted my "scan button" on my IdeaPad. Can't figure out how to scan. Uninstalled/reinstalled printer drivers. Can't find how to scan and want to get a short-cut button back on the start menu. My printer is set up for both wireless and USB printing. Trying to get scanning on the wireless setup, but want to get it on both. Any help greatly appreciated.

I found the note which says I can no longer use HP Scan, which I've been using? I bought this printer specifically for print and scan. I now have to get a different app from a different company? Isn't that kind of like buying a Matress from Store A, a few years later, they remove the springs and tell me I now have to go to Store B to get different springs if I want to continue to use the mattress? Doesn't seem honest, fair or right to me, but maybe someone can explain?

OK, I clicked to download HP Smart app. I got a window with options and clicked on 'scan.' Even though I have a microsoft account, it's requiring me to create an account in order to scan. What I want to do:

1. Have a shortcut on my start menu I can click to open the scanner (the way it used to work).

2. Put the document on the printer and  scan.

3. Is there any way to get back the HP Scan I inadvertently deleted?

Questions about how the HP Smart app works.

1. Can I use it without and account?

2. Is the account so microsoft can track what I'm doing?

3. Will my scan be local on my system only, or in the process of scanning with HP Smart app, is it being saved to microsoft, in their "cloud" or other place?

Thank you for getting me started, Raj2111. I have downloaded the Windows scanner. When I open it, it tells me to connect a scanner. My HP 1536 dnf multifunction printer/scanner is connected and turned on, but Windows scanner is not seeing it. I have been doing keyword searches to find solutions to scanning issue for a couple of weeks, and have keyword searched how to connect the scanner, looked at the printer properties, confirmed it is set as the default printer, but found nothing helpful. Before posting the first time, I uninstalled/reinstalled the print drivers. I can't find anywhere these drivers included scanning capabilities, but assume they should have and Windows scanner should automatically detect the printer, but it isn't. I have also run the HP doctor, which didn't provide answers. Next step?

I did click on the link (here) you gave, but it just took me to the page I started on where it said I should use HP Smart. I've never had to create an account to scan and assuming I shouldn't have to now. Anyway, I was unsuccessful using HP Smart.

Hi @Thanksforhelp

Your welcomer and thanks for the update, i understand that you are still not able to print.

Lets do this,

Go to Services.

Check Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)

Right-click WIA, select Properties, and then click Automatic from the Startup type drop-down. Next, under Service status, click Start. If the Start button is grayed out, make sure the following services are running and set as Automatic. Then, try to start WIA again.

Try scanning and let me know.

Not sure what you mean by "make sure the following services are running . . ."

WIA is already set to "automatic" but start and resume buttons are greyed out.

Clicked restart. Nothing changed. Some observations which may or may not be important:

Poked around and found "service depends on RPC"

There is no recovery set up

Found "Path to executable Sys32" not sure if these relate, but I have 64-bit

No change to scan issue. Other ideas? Thank you.

Hi @Thanksforhelp

Please try this document.

https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/ish_2041634-1713099-16

HP Smart prompts you to create an account to prevent unauthorized use of your printer. Rest assured, any scans or prints made through HP Smart are not stored in the cloud or any database; they remain solely on your PC.

Its completely safe.

When I bought this printer, my computer consultant who has since retired set up my laptop and printer. I was able to scan by clicking the icon on my task bar or the shortcut "button" on the start menu. I didn't have to create yet another account. Just click and scan. It was so easy.

I have the icon for Windows scanner on the task bar and the shortcut on the start menu. Now all I need is to get them connected to scanner.

This has been a great printer for me until now. I don't want another account and wonder if this problem will persist with HP Smart, which I don't want to use, since the scanner seems undetectable.

For a start, should I be able to go in somewhere to "see" the scanner? I think I used to be able to go to Control Panel - Install/uninstall programs and see the HP components (printer, fax, scan) listed. Right now, I can just see the printer, support solutions, update and learning center. Although I've run HP doctor and reinstalled the drivers, I wonder if something didn't work properly and I'm missing scanning in the drivers? It just seems it's not the scanning "app" but something else, as Windows Scan should be working.

Appreciate your helping me through this and hoping for success.

Document you provided is instruction for Windows 11. I have Windows 10, but still tried the first instructions. When I right click the printer, scan is not an option listed. (I don't remember it ever being there, but it may have been.)
