I repeated the same steps above on my MacBook Air with pretty much the same results, except the the Apple Image Capture worked to scan from my printer to my MacBook Air.

PROBLEM RESOLVED!!!! In the process of installing on my MacBook Air, I went carefully through the process and found that as I was installing the HP Essential Software I received an error message that required me to go into System Preferences and allow an install from HP. Once I dd this, I was able to do everything from my MacBook Air, so I went back to my iMac and reinstalled and repeated the steps and was successful. 

 

As most always it was operator error, because I missed the cue to go to System Preferences the first time through on my iMac and just hit the continue button which allowed the software to install but it was not a complete install.

 

Thanks for all your time and effort in troubleshooting with me. This is totally back to basics... Computer 101... Read every message and respond accordingly!
