Officejet 5258
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Recently replaced my Officejet 5740 which was jamming with a 5258.  It prints and scans properly, but there is a fax problem.  First, there is only a network connection and in the setup, it seemed to assume this because it offered no other hookup options.  Yet when you go into the fax program it says there are two connections and makes you choose.  Under "Printers and Devices" it shows the two connections plus the fax printer.  When you try to send a fax, it spools and then starts an endless cycle between "processing" and "printer busy."   Under every other choice in the HP software, the programs assumes the printer has a network connection, yet under "Fax" it assumes two connections..  Whatever, it will not send the fax.

@manniesm,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • Have you set up the fax correctly?
  • Do you use a shared telephone line(telephone line shared for phone calls & fax) or a dedicated line(line used for only faxing) for faxing from the printer?

First, let's check if the fax is set up on your printer.

You can run a simple fax test that should tell you whether your printer is ready to fax or not.

You can test your fax setup to check if your printer is ready to fax or not.

The test does the following:

  • Tests the fax hardware
  • Verifies the correct type of phone cord is connected to the printer
  • Checks that the phone cord is plugged into the correct port
  • Checks for a dial tone
  • Checks for an active phone line
  • Tests the status of your phone line connection

The printer prints a report with the results of the test. If the test fails, review the report for information on how to fix the problem and rerun the test.

To run the fax test, Go To set  UP > Tools > Run fax test

If the fax test fails, check if you have properly configured the fax.

Refer to this document for the fax set up.

Let me know what happens.
