*Not sure if my printer is an Inkjet Printer.  I have written before and need to again.  I had to opt out of the instant ink service as I didn't print enough and my ink would dry out and I would need ink and HP would say "I have plenty", etc. etc.  I opted out as I thought it would be better just to buy my own ink.  I have been accused of using "counterfeit cartridges" which is untrue.  I received a final letter that I would not have access to "print from any device" and other things.  I now am not able to even scan or fax from my printer and those things do not require ink.  What am I supposed to do?  I lost my voice 2+ years ago to COVID and this is my only way to communicate (printing out letters, faxing questions and information, etc.)  So, now I can't only not print, but I can't fax or scan?  Can anyone help me?  Thank you in advance.

Hi @JMetz35,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the frustration you're experiencing with your printer and the limitations imposed after opting out of the Instant Ink program. Here are some steps you can take to address the issues with your HP printer:

Steps to Address Printer Issues After Opting Out of Instant Ink:

Check Printer Status:

  • Make sure your printer is properly connected to your network and powered on.
  • Verify that it is recognized by your computer or other devices.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve issues.
  • Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model to download the latest firmware.

Use Original HP Cartridges:

  • Ensure that you are using original HP cartridges. If you have been accused of using counterfeit cartridges, it might be worth double-checking the authenticity of your cartridges.

Reset Printer Settings:

  • Resetting the printer to factory settings can sometimes resolve unexpected behavior.
  • Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers on your computer.
  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners on your Mac.
  • Remove the printer by selecting it and clicking the - button.
  • Reinstall the printer drivers from the HP Support website.

Check for HP Software:

  • Ensure that you have the latest HP software installed on your computer.
  • HP Smart app or HP Easy Start can help you manage your printer and perform tasks like scanning and faxing.

Specific Steps for Scanning and Faxing:

Scanning:

Using HP Smart App:

  • Download and install the HP Smart app from the App Store.
  • Open the app and add your printer.
  • Use the scanning feature within the app.

Using Preview on macOS:

  • Open the Preview application.
  • Go to File > Import from Scanner.
  • Select your HP printer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Faxing:

Using Printer's Control Panel:

  • Make sure your printer is connected to a phone line.
  • Use the printer’s control panel to send a fax.
  • Refer to your printer's manual for detailed instructions.

Using HP Software:

  • If your printer supports faxing through the HP Smart app, you can use this feature.
  • Open the HP Smart app and look for the fax option

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your response.  I appreciate your efforts to help, but I have done all that you have asked and it still won't work.  I have been told that ALL cartridges are considered counterfeit by HP unless they are bought through the HP instant Ink Program/Subscription.  The cartridges do not even look the same, but are clearly HP ink that I am buying.  The ones that were sent by HP when I was in the instant ink program are different shape.  I do not know what else I am supposed to do.  I am not using counterfeit cartridges.  Anyone?

If you are not subscribed to Instant Ink you cannot use cartridges that were supplied under that program and will be labelled as such. Once you cancel your subscription you must purchase standard retail cartridges for your printer and install them.

Thank you for your response.  I went to Office Max (or Office Depot) after I cancelled my subscription as the ink was dried out and purchased 2 new HP ink cartridges.  I then installed them and was still being alerted that they were counterfeit.  This is months ago.  I continued to get the emails from HP saying that as I was using counterfeit cartridges my services would be cut off.  I tried to tell them that I was not using counterfeit cartridges but my printer was shut down anyway.  I don't know how to get around this as I have done everything that has been suggested.  Thank you all for your assistance.  If anyone has any new ideas I would truly appreciate them.
