I purchased a new officejet pro in April 2022. I chose this printer as it had OCR in it. I installed the software utility for the full features in two of my PC's an envy win 10 and a spectre win 11 and the OCR worked fine. I had to do a reinstall of the software in my spectre PC las t week and the OCR option is no longer in the install software. After two days and three hours going round and round with HP tech support to resolve this issue They had no answers for me. I asked for a case manager and she put me in touch with their smart friend software dept. They wanted to charge me to try to resolve the issue. I have no problems installing software and the printer has a three year warranty on it. There is nothing wrong with the printer,Screenshot (5).png the software for the OCR is not there. I finally found where HP did a software update for the 6978 on May 26, 2022 and they eliminated the OCR. I am furious, who gives HP the right to discontinue the OCR on a product that was sold to me with it installed in it. If HP wants to discontinue the OCR in new purchase that is their right, but not make it unavailable to the 6978 that I purchased with it in it.

The embedded OCR software was removed.

Possible reasons:  No longer supported, lost license -- "Something" happened and the software was removed.

OCR libraries have been made available for Select Printers in the Universal Scan Software package.

The obvious solutions:

  • Replace your printer -- We do not judge what people decide about printers, computers, including HP or other brands.
  • Purchase or obtain free OCR software for your use.
  • Contact HP Support - plead your case.

Thank you for the reply. The OCR was included in the software download when I purchased the printer in April 2022. They did a software  update on May 26, 2022 and did not reinstall the OCR. I enclosed a copy of this on my post here, This is wrong. I would not have bought the printer if it did not have the OCR in it. HP has an obligation to support the printer drivers that came with the printer.
