(W10 Dell laptop connected via WiFi to HP OJ 3830.)
Can print to OJ 3830 just fine.
Can scan to Dell laptop just fine from originals in the feeder or singly on the glass using either the machine's control panel for a push scan or the HP software for a pull scan.
Can copy just fine from originals in the feeder or singly on the glass using the machine's control panel.
Faxing is a different story and the problem.
Place a single document on the glass. Press Fax, produces error message " Automatic Document Feeder Is Empty".
Place a single document, or several documents, in the feeder. Press Fax, operates normally.
A workaround that involves doing single page faxing using the feeder is barely adequate as I often fax small items that would likely jam in the feeder (receipts) or unworkable if I need to fax magazine pages or book pages. Yes I could copy these bulky items first, then fax the copy, but that's triple work and I shouldn't have to do that.
Research shows this error message was common after a Mac OS update, but I'm on Windows, not Mac. And not seeing how a computer OS affects an operation that should be wholly self-contained in the OJ3830 and should work even if the unit was 100 miles away from the nearest computer.
Assistance appreciated!

You should make this change from the printer front panel itself @PerplexedToo .
After selecting Fax select Setup, then select Preferences, there you should see the option.

Please click on Fax and there click the gear icon, select Preferences and toggle off the Scan and Fax toggle.
Now faxing from the flatbed glass will be possible, enabling this option requires using the feeder only.
