HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

8720 was able to email scans for years.  We moved email hosting to a new company.  We kept the same router.  Now the scanner "cannot find server".  The scanner is connected to router.  Please help.

Hi @mapmaker17,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 cannot scan to email after your email hosting was moved, even though it worked before. Let’s go through some steps to get your scanner communicating with your email server again.

Check Network Connection

Ensure the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.

Print a network configuration page from the printer to confirm it has a valid IP address.

Verify Email Server Settings

Go to the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer’s IP address in a browser.

Check the Scan to Email setup: confirm the SMTP server address, port number, and encryption type (SSL/TLS) match the new email provider’s requirements.

Make sure the email account username and password are updated if they changed during the hosting move.

Test Email Settings

Most HP printers have a “Test Email” button in the Scan to Email setup. Use this to verify connectivity.

If the test fails, double-check SMTP server, port, and credentials.

Adjust Firewall or Security Settings

Ensure your router or email provider is not blocking the printer’s access to the SMTP server.

Some email hosts require “less secure app access” or an app-specific password for devices like printers.

Update Firmware

Check that the printer has the latest firmware installed. Outdated firmware can prevent successful communication with new email servers.

Restart Devices

Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.

Restart your router to refresh network connections.

Reconfigure Scan to Email

If the issue persists, delete the existing Scan to Email setup and re-enter all settings manually using the new email host information.

Verify DNS Resolution

On the network configuration page, check if the printer can resolve domain names. If it can’t, try using the SMTP server’s IP address instead of its domain name.

I hope this helps.
