HP Officejet 2620 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

OfficeJet 2620 has stopped scanning (and copying).  Printing works fine.  Have tried multiple clean reinstallations using full webpack (118-OJ620).  It is connected via USB to a standalone CPU running Windows 10 (x64) (originally Windows 7).  HP installer and Scan and print doctor stop their "fixes" at the scanner driver.  Looking at the scanner in device manager, the drivers all say "requires further installation".  Unable also to update firmware via USB even though printer is visible and recognised.  Same issues trying to use WinScan or any other scan software.  All error messages point to "scan driver error".  Has been working fine for years - why does it stop working now..?  Especially when the printer is visible on the computer, and the computer is visible on the printer via USB?

Hi @NannyJean,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP OfficeJet 2620, especially since it has been working fine for years. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the scanning and copying problems.

Troubleshooting Steps

Check USB Connection:

  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer. Consider using a different USB port on your computer or a different USB cable if possible.

Remove and Reinstall the Printer:

  • Uninstall the Printer:
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
    • Find your HP OfficeJet 2620, click on it, and select Remove device.
  • Restart Your Computer.
  • Reinstall the Printer:
    • Download the latest driver and software package from the HP Support website.
    • Make sure to select the version for Windows 10 (x64).
    • Follow the installation instructions and connect the printer when prompted.

Update the Scanner Driver Manually:

  • Go to Device Manager.
  • Locate Imaging devices, expand it, and find your scanner.
  • Right-click on the scanner and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow any prompts.

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • You mentioned running it before, but ensure you have the latest version.
  • Download and run the tool from HP's official site.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and fix scanning issues.

Check Windows Services:

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Look for services related to HP, such as HP Device Manager or Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Ensure these services are running. Right-click on any that are not and select Start.

Update Windows:

  • Make sure your Windows 10 is fully updated. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Check for Conflicting Software:

  • Sometimes, third-party security software can block printer/scanner functionality. Temporarily disable any antivirus or firewall software to see if that resolves the issue.

Firmware Update via USB:

  • If you're unable to update the firmware via USB, check if there is an option to update it through the HP Smart app (if installed) or consider using a different connection method (like Wi-Fi) if available.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
