OfficeJet 4650
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

We are using Win8.1 and installed a new HP OfficeJet 4650.  The printer will print, but will not recognize a scanner.  The error message is sayign that it can't see the computer.

There are no issues with the install.  Downloaded the latest driver from the HP website.  We have walked through every step for troubleshooting that is posted on the HP website.  When we run the (sorry I think it was called scan doctor, it is off the HP website and does troubleshooting), it says there is an issue with drivers.  However, we literally have removed and installed them 3 or 4 times, all from the website.

We are at a loss of how it can print with no issue, but will not see the computer when we try to scan.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Are you facing this issue after the update?

Is the copy working fine?

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps before posting in the Forum?

If the copy is working fine, let's enable the scan to computer.

  1. Search Windows for your printer model name, and click the printer name in the list of results. HP Printer Assistant opens.
  2. Click Scanner Actions, and then click Manage Scan to Computer.
  3. Click Enable to activate the scan to computer option.

Try to scan.

If the issue persists, I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and Install the drivers, follow the steps below:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click on this link: HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads to download and install the printer driver.

Assign Manual IP to the printer:

1) Print a Network configuration page from the printer's control panel.

2) Look for IP address from the Network configuration page.

3) Open web browser - Chrome or IE or any other browser that you are using.

4) Type the IP address mentioned on Network configuration page into the browser's address bar or URL bar and press enter button.

5) Go to the Network tab.

6) Click on Networking from the left pane.

7) Then click on Network Address (IP).

😎 Click on Manual IP Address and go to suggest a Manual IP.

9) Scroll down the screen and select Manual DNS server.

10) Enter the Primary and secondary DNS server from the Network Configuration page into the Manual Preferred DNS server field.

11) Click on Apply.

Refer to the video link for step by step instructions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCnYyq80V9g

Note: The video is for win 8 but steps are similar for other operating systems as well. You need to enter the IP address in the browser's URL or the address bar to access the printer page.

Hello,

I have exactly the same issue as described below.

My printer was working fine until today, when I had to uninstall and reinstall.

After that it prints all good now.

But I have lost the ability to Scan and when I open the HP Printer Assistant do not even have a 'Scan' tab in the banner to click on, only Print and Fax ?

So I cannot even click on Scan Actions to check set up.

Have run it through the HP Print / Scan doctor which tells me it cannot fix this problem.

I am at a loss as to what next and why a device that is for printing, scanning and faxing (of which I don't use), can now not even give me any scan tab option to click on?

Can someone please help and please don't tell me to uninstall and reinstall because I have done that.

Thank you very much

@honeycat1

I suggest you uninstall the printer driver from root level and download the full feature and Firmware again

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer and download the Full Feature Software and the firmware from Here and follow the onscreen Instructions

Alternately you can also try the HP Smart App for scanning. Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04675142

Thank you for this detailed reply, it is helpful information.

But have already done this after spending 3.5 hours online with HP support and still have same issues so a bit over it to say the least 😞

So yes I am uninstalling the printer completely again as I am getting rid of it !

As also spending a lot on cartridges so exploring options for a replacement now.

Thank you anyway

cheers

I have the same problem with the latest windows 10.  Also, I cancelled my subscription with HP print and all of a sudden I'm having scan and print problems.  Please delete your IP connection to my printer if you are still connected and inform me why even though I load the latest drivers I still get a driver error and comm issues.  The only scan function that currently works is Windows 10 Fax & Scan function.  Print currently not working because of the cartridges not deleted from the subscription service.  New cartridges are on the way.

f you have windows 10, use the windows 10 fax & scan function in your program folder for windows accessories folder.

Thank you for the information.

I have packed up my HP printer now, seriously over spending 3-4 hours with online support then continuing to try to fix it.

There are only so many times you can go through the suggestions with nothing changing to fix it.

So I am now happily printing and scanning with my new printer

Companies really need to find a way to make fixes way less complicated than uninstalling, removing drivers, reinstalling etc etc, it is too difficult for non technical people

cheers
