Thank you. I called and talked to a nice young lady. She couldn't help me, but she tried very hard. Apparently, my 4 year old MacBook Air is too old.
The good news is that after I hung up with her, I tried scanning from my ipad and it worked. So, problem solved. Thank you all for your help. I don't think trading this printer in for a different model would have fixed the problem. I can live with scanning to my ipad and then emailing it to my computer.

2. Operating System installed (if applicable)
• Example: Windows XP, Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit
3. Error message (if any)
• Example: ""Low disk space"" error in Windows
4. Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred
• Examples: Upgrading your Operating System or installing a new software; or installing new hardware like a printer, modem, or router.
