After a few weeks of working correctly, our HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus now fails to copy with this error "Paper detected does not match paper size or type selected.  Make sure the paper size or type is correct to continue the job".  It then feeds a blank sheet to the output tray.

This behavior is consistent whether I originate the copy from the scanner glass or the sheet feeder.  The original document, the paper in the tray and the settings are all 8.5" x 11".  Same result if I change the size setting to automatic. Type is plain.

The firmware is the latest:  CLP1CN1304AR.

By the way, printing works fine.  It is only copying that fails.

Hey RicoRico,

It sounds like the paper sensors are out of calibration on the 8600 plus that you have.  Have you tried a full power drain to the printer and made sure the unit is plugged into a direct wall outlet for power?

  • Unplug the unit while on
  • Unplug the other end of the power cord from the power source
  • Wait 1-3 minutes
  • Plug unit back up for power in a direct wall outlet?

This will get the unit to power into the last known good state and hopefully will resolve this issue.  If not let me know and I can provide you with the steps to perform a factory reset on this printer as a next step in trying to fix your issue.

Hi Mnemonic,

I hate to hear you are having issues. If this occurs when copying from the front panel, a hardware issue may be present.  Click Here to complete steps specific to this issue.  If you are still experiencing issues after all steps have been completed, we can try a semi-full reset that may resolve the issue.  If successful this will completely clear the memory of the printer. All saved settings will be erased.  If you would like to try this prior to contacting HP technical phone support to explore replacement options based on warranty status, I can send the steps in a private message.  This will require you to agree not to publish the steps.  If you prefer to contact phone support directly, global contact information can be accessed, Here

Hope this helps!

Hi, I am trying to recalibrate the media sensor and following the instructions and in order to open the support menu it says to "Press * and # simultaneously, press 3 -2 -9 , and then press OK."   What it doesn't say is how to come up with a keyboard to press these buttons.  Help!

Thanks.

Hi Gfy,

I understand that you are getting a paper mismatch error when you are trying to copy. I will do my best to help you resolve this issue. I suggest that you update the Firmware for your printer. You will need to know the Model Number of your printer. Then follow the steps in this document for Getting the Latest Firmware and Product Updates.  If you are still getting the error message after the update you can try running 99 blank copies through the printer, I feel this should recalibrate the media sensors.

I hope this helped, let me know.

Thank you,

I worked on behalf of HP.

I'm having same issue with Paper Mismatch error when trying to to use copy feature on HP8600. Also, when trying to print from computer it is taking almost two minutes to load the paper. I have tried numerous suggestions on these HP bulletin boards without success. Any chance you can send me instructions on full rest? Thanks.

I had the same problem. Calibrating the linefeed fixed my problem.

Calibrate the linefeed:
Use an automated tool to calibrate the linefeed.
On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon (). The Setup menu displays.
Swipe the display to scroll to Tools, and then touch Tools.
Touch Calibrate Linefeed.
After the printer prints a test page, touch OK, and then recycle or discard the test page.
Print another Print Quality Diagnostic Page to see if the issue is resolved.
