Officejet 4650 won't scan from glass

I am trying to scan a drawing from a book with my Officejet 4650 from the scanner glass. When I select my printer/scanner and click SCAN the timebar scrolls for about 15 seconds says "preparing to scan", then I get an alert saying "Automatic Document Feeder is Empty" and "No items were detected in the Automatic Document Feeder. Please place your originals into the Automatic Document Feeder and start the scan again."

I made sure there were no paper jams and nothing in the doc feeder. I also unplugged from power for 5mins and rebooted. Still same issues. I've reloaded the HP Utility again but still same issues. My printer won't print from the glass.

Unfortunately, HP Easy Scan is not currently supported in macOS Catalina.  For devices like the OfficeJet 4650, the symptom is exactly as described.  Anything loaded  through the ADF will work fine but scanning from the flat bed generates the ADF Empty error.

HP is working to restore the full functionality of HP Easy Scan in macOS Catalina.

In the interim you can use Image Capture to retrieve scans from either the flat bed or the ADF.
