Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Officejet Pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I need to scan in a lot of articles and OCR is essential. I tried to use the HP Scan program on my computer, but it doesn't give me the option to save it as a searchable PDF. I uninstalled the HP software and tried to reinstall it from the provided disk, but it does not work because I'm running Windows 10. I then downloaded the software off the HP website, but when it came to picking what I want to be installed, it said I.R.I.S. OCR is already installed. I checked in my programs and it cannot be found. Anyway, I continued and opened up the HP screen and tried to scan, but it still doesn't have the option for searchable PDF. I tried the solved solution on another thread and completely reinstalled everything, but nothing changed. Then I found another thread with a link to a Readiris Pro 14 download, but it says I need to complete the activation by putting the HP CD back in, which doesn't work because I'm running Windows 10. So now I can scan, but I have no OCR.

What do I do?

I was able to fix the problem.

I used the instructions on another post to completely delete the OCR application using Microsoft Fix It, which then allowed me to download the HP software again and install it from scratch. Now I'm able to install the OCR software that comes standard with HP printers.

Hey @reunsch,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you are trying to use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software on your Windows 10 PC. While the printer can certainly use OCR software, HP does not create nor provide support for OCR software directly. If you are unable to run the original CD, your best option would be to contact a third party software company such as ReadIris to determine if they have any software, for free or available for purchase, that you can install on your PC.

Please let me know if this helps you to be able to scan using OCR software. If it does, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.
