My officejet 8610 will copy or fax from the glass, but the document feeder stopped working after I cleared a paper jam.

Now the error message says scanner lid or document feeder open.  But it's not.

How can I get the document feeder working for fax and copy again?

thanks!

@Susan20110,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I see from your post you keep getting a error message scanner lid or document feeder open on your HP OfficeJet printer. Don't worry we're here to help you.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any changes on the printer before the issue started?

Have you checked for any obstructions inside the printer? Are you able to move the carriage freely?

Have you tried to clean the paper feed and pick rollers?

Did you try to update the printer firmware?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Let's start off by updating the printer firmware. If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to install the latest firmware update on your printer from our HP support website. Once done, restart the printer.

For more details on how to update, please use this link: HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to do a hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If the issue persists, please follow the instructions to clean the Rollers - For more details, please follow the steps from the support document.

Once done, lets try to make a copy from the printer and check check if that works.

Could you please respond to this post with the details and with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

that said, If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

Thanks so much for your reply!  🙂

On close examination, it appears that the part that contains the white piece that senses that a document is in the feeder, is not seated properly.  I can push it down into place, but it springs back up about an eighth of an inch.  I tried taping it down tightly but get the same error message.  Should I try to take the doc feeder apart and see what is keeping that part (right under the document feeder cover) from seating properly?

@Susan20110,

It's great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

After reviewing your post, I see that this looks like a possible hardware failure with the printer.

In this scenario, I will share you a private message with details. Please watch your inbox for more information.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂

Hi Mr. Jeet_Singh,

I'm getting same error "Scanner lid or document feeder open". I fallowed your first replyed step to Miss Suzan 20110, still I'm having same issue. Can you send me the massage the one you sent it to her or if you have another way to solve the problem.

Sincerely Yours,

Jamalko

I took it to best buy and they said it needed a piece to repair it and the cost to repair was more than buying a new one.

So I bought the HP 6978 which is very similar but smaller than the old one and I'm very satisfied with it.

I think it was on sale for about $70 if I traded in the broken one.
