I have repeatedly gotten this error message after running the HP Scan and Print Doctor.  I have tried all of the suggested steps without success, except for requesting service for the device.  Any other ideas? Thanks

Hi Agateeater,

To confirm the steps that you have completed. I am including the following document ''Scan Cannot be Performed Because Another Program or Computer is Using the Networked Device' Message ...'. If you have not completed all the troubleshooting in this document please complete these steps.

Please let me know if you are able to scan after this, thank you.

I can scan from the control panel, but cannot save to the computer. I cannot scan from Solutions center, but can fax and print. Had already completed the suggested steps prior to posting in the forum. I'm thinking this hay have something to do with the TWAIN driver.

Hello Agateeater,

Since you have completed the steps, and believe the issue is with the TWAIN folder. My best suggestion for this is to reinstall your operating system. I have included the document 'Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7)'. Please follow the steps for performing a full factory recovery.

Please let me know if you do need further assistance with the factory recovery of your PC.

Thank you.

What's your next best solution.  I upgraded to Windows 8 through a download from Microsoft.  Don't know how to get back to that to upgrade again.  What a pain in the butt this all is. One more question while I'm at it.  Will the second paper tray from the 8500 fit the 8600 pro?

Hello Agateeater,

When doing a recovery, and having to revert back to the previous version of Windows, you can always go back into the Windows Store, and re-download Windows 8.1. I have included the document 'Updating Windows 8 to 8.1'.

The second paper tray for the 8500 will not fit/compatible with the 8600.

I have installed windows 10 pro, and am now getting this error, i run print and scan doctor and get the message that scan is fine, but when i go to actually scan I cannot and i get this errror. My printer is officejet 6500 wireless.

Using Windows 10 on HP elitebook with OfficeJet 6500 709n printer.

I can scan from the printer control panel to a SD card but not to the computer. The computer shows in the list on the control panel.

Get the same message about another device has control whether I use HP Solution Center or HP Print and Scan Doctor. Scan Doctor passes each check OK but cannot do test scan.

I can scan from Paint but not from any HP program.

I have followed every checklist that I can find. Completely removed printer and all software associated with the printer. Re-booted laptop, re-booted printer. Re-installed software and configured printer. Printer is networked with wireless turned off.

I have almost exactly the same problem as wdanielw and have tried everything

I have the Officejet Pro 8500 printerscanner and after upgrade to W10 the printer is still perfect but I cannot scan. I too get the message that another computer is using the device.

HP's response is that my printer/scanner is not supported any more and so it seems to be impossible to speak to anyone at HP about it but I believe that there is a problem with the Windows 10 Full Feature Software that they launched in early 2015.

One thing that I notice is that although this software is version 14.8 it only shows in Programs and Features as V14.0. Is this just an electronic typo or am I only getting the Windows 7 software to be installed

Which makes me think there is something wrong with it and thus I believe that HP should review this and not look to the Forum to sort out.
