MFP M281fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear HP-Team,

I set-up the above mentioned printer (MFP M281fdw) for our office yesterday and so far everything works, except for the Scan-to-E-Mail feature. Problem is, everytime I try to connect my Outlook com Mail-Address to the printer it gives the following error-message:

Cannot resolve the SMTP server. Check the SMTP and DNS server settings with your system administrator or Internet Service Provider.

I've tried several options but cannot solve this problem.

  • SMTP Port 25, 587, 465
  • Tried different smtp servers but at last only tried different settings with the server indicated on the Outlook.com page (smtp.office365.com)
  • Ticked and unticked "Always use secure connection (SSL/TLS)
  • Updated the firmware of the printer to the current version "20190218"
  • etc. any other changes you could possibly think of 🙂

While testing the same settings in a mail-client (Thunderbird, Outlook, etc.), I figured that it wasn't possible to connect via SSL/TLS. It had to be STARTTLS. Otherwise it wasn't possible to connect my account.

Hence, I updated the firmware of the printer and hoped that you provided some sort of possibility to use STARTTLS. Unfortunately, this isn't the case.

Can you please help me with this?

Best

Steven

Hi Steven.

From the printer's homepage click the Network tab and then click on Network Identification from the left pane.

Set a manual DNS configuration, set the Primary DNS as 8.8.8.8 and the Secondary as 8.8.4.4, then confirm any change.

From within the Scan tab select Outgoing Email Profiles and edit the wizard, be sure to check the SSL/TLS box with either port 465 or 587, then press Save and Test and check for any difference.

Please let me know if that may make any difference,

Shlomi
