Paper fed into ADF jams after partial feed

I placed a document into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray on top of my Officejet Pro 8620 and attempted to make a copy.  The document began to feed then stopped as it jammed completely part way into the mechanism.  The noise it made was like screeching tires when someone slams on the brakes. 

It is very difficult to extract the document and the error message on the printer reads:

"Paper Jam

The original is jammed in the automatic document feeder

Open the ADF cover, remove and reload the original, and then try again."

Upon removing the original there are two symetrical marks like the rollers were spinning on the paper but something inside the ADF was blocking the feed of the document.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums. 

MKazi is at your service. 

I understand that you have an HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer and the ADF jammed the paper. You have been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills and valuable patience. Kudos to you for that.

What is the paper size you're trying to use through the ADF?

This looks like a mechanical issue. However, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix: 

NOTE: Please skip any steps that you have already attempted. 

Remove any loose or jammed paper that is accessible from the ADF area.

1. Turn off the printer.

2. Lift the ADF cover.

   

3. Lift the tab located on the left edge of the ADF to raise the ADF mechanism.

   

4. Push in the green tab located in the center of the ADF.

   

5. Gently pull out any jammed paper from the ADF. To avoid tearing any whole sheets of paper, pull out the paper with both hands.

      CAUTION: If the paper tears while you remove it, check the rollers and wheels for any torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the ADF. Use a flashlight to thoroughly check the rollers for torn pieces of paper. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur.

6. Pull up on the green tab to set it back in place.

7. Close the ADF cover tightly at both ends.

   

Make sure the carriage moves freely across the width of the printer.

1. Turn on the printer.

2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer, and then unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.

      WARNING: To avoid the risk of electrical shock, you must unplug the power cord before moving the carriage by hand and resetting the paper feed mechanism.

3. Disconnect the USB or Ethernet cable from the rear of the printer, if you have a cable connection to the printer.

4. Place your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then pull to open the cartridge access door.

5. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

6. Use a flashlight to check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more jams might occur.

   

7. Gently pull out any jammed or torn paper from inside the printer.

8. Reach into the ink cartridge access area, and then manually move the carriage.

   • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer, move the carriage to the left side of the printer.

   • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

   • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

9. Remove any loose or torn pieces of paper.

10. Make sure the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer by gently pushing the carriage to the left, and then to the right.

11. Close the ink cartridge access door.

    

12. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

13. Reconnect the USB or Ethernet cable.

If you are trying to copy or fax a document, and the document does not feed into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), clean the ADF rollers and the separator pad. If you are not using the ADF, continue to the next step.

1. Lift the top cover of the ADF. This provides easy access to the rollers and separator pad.

2. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

3. Press the cloth against the rollers, and then rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

4. Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).

5. Close the ADF cover tightly at both ends.

Clean the paper feed rollers in the ADF area.

1. Lift the top cover of the ADF. This provides easy access to the rollers and separator pad.

Try to print. If the error persists, clean the rollers in another area of the printer.
