PhotoSmart S20
Microsoft Windows XP

I have been using a PhotoSmart S20 successfully with XP. I had to download ps804en.exe to make it work but it has been working just fine until it is suddenly not recognized by Windows. Device Manager shows an unrecognized device and no driver associated with the device. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times with no effect. I tried a different USB port that is known good. The cables are securely attached.  I can't download the driver directly from the HP site because it wants to give me Driver Easy which won't run on XP. Suggestions?

Hi,

An unknown device likely occurs due to a faulty USB cable and such can occur over time. have you tried using another USB 2.0 cable and check if you may see any difference then?

What a great idea!  But I just got it working. I unplugged the unit, waited a moment and plugged it back in. Now everything is working. Thanks for your great thought--I will keep that in mind as a possible solution to this and other similar problems.

Great to see that the problem been resolved by unplugging the cable for a while!

Please keep that in mind and replace the cable if any similar behavior returns in the near future, as such cables can get faulty over time.

Cheers,

Shlomi
