Photosmart Plus B209a
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My Photosmart Plus B209a will not scan to computer. I get an error message that states the imaging device is not found and gives me all the steps to try and get it back online.  I've done all those steps many times, to no avail. The scanner worked 2 weeks ago. Then  then next time I tried to scan something it didn't work. It is set up wirelessly. By the way, the printer works.

Hi! @AnnTN, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have issues scanning to the computer and you are getting error username or password incorrect on your printer.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Do you see the scanner blub glowing while scanning from your printer?

As you mentioned you have issues scanning to the computer and you are getting error username or password incorrect on your printer.

Are you using scan to email or scan to a network folder? If so which feature are you using?

Try the steps recommended below.

Go to the device manager(just type device manager on Start->Search) and make sure your device is ENABLED under imaging and devices/
Also, make sure your windows imaging service up and running. You can do it by launching services (click Start->Search->type services)
Now restart the PC and see the scan app is works

Also, try the steps recommended below.

  1. Load the item on the scanner glass, in the document feeder slot, or in the automatic document feeder (ADF), depending on your printer type and features.

       NOTE:

Do not load photos in the ADF to prevent damage to the photos and the printer.

  2. Search Windows for 'paint', then click the Paint app in the list of results.

  3. Click File or the menu icon  , then click From scanner or camera.

Figure : Menu to scan from Paint

    Menu to scan from Paint
  4. Select a color option for the type of image or document you are scanning. To change brightness, contrast, and resolution settings, click Adjust the quality of the scanned picture.

  5. Click Scan.

  6. In the File menu, click Save as to save the scan in the desired image format and folder on the computer.

Select the file type you want to save, and then scan the item.

  1. On the printer control panel, press the Scan button.

  2. Use the arrow buttons to select the type of scan you want, select Computer, and then press Start Scan.

  3. The folder where the scan saved (usually My Documents) automatically opens on the computer. Double-click the scan file in the list to view the scan, rename it, or change any additional settings.

Try the steps recommended below to scan to computer.

Configure the Scan to E-mail feature
Click the System tab.
On the left navigation pane, click the Administration link.
In the Enabled Features area, set the Scan to Email option to On.
Click the Scan tab.
On the left navigation pane, click the Outgoing E-mail Profiles link.
On the Outgoing E-mail Profiles page, click the New button.
In the E-mail Address area, complete the following fields:
In the Your E-mail Address field, enter the sender’s email address for the new outgoing email profile.
In the Display Name field, enter the sender’s name. This is the name that will display on the printer control panel.
In the SMTP Server Settings area, complete the following fields:
In the SMTP Server field, enter the address of the SMTP server.
In the SMTP Port field, enter the SMTP port number.
   NOTE:
In most cases, the default port number does not need to be changed.
   NOTE:
If you are using a hosted SMTP service such as gmail, verify the SMTP address, port number, and SSL settings from the service provider’s Web site or other sources. Typically, for gmail, the SMTP address is https://hp.care/2pzQw1q, port number 465, and the SSL should be enabled.
Please refer to online sources to confirm these server settings are current and valid at the time of configuration.
If you are using Google™ Gmail for email service, select the Always use secure connection (SSL/TLS) check box.
If the SMTP server requires authentication to send an email, complete the following fields in the SMTP Authentication area:
Select the SMTP server requires authentication for outgoing e-mail messages check box.
In the SMTP User ID field, enter the user ID for the SMTP server.
In the SMTP Password field, enter the password for the SMTP server.
To require a PIN to be entered on the printer control panel before an email is sent using the email address, complete the following fields in the Optional PIN area:
In the PIN (Optional) field, enter a four-digit PIN.
In the Confirm PIN field, re-enter the four-digit PIN.
   NOTE:
HP recommends creating a PIN to secure the email profile.
   NOTE:
When a PIN is created, it must be entered on the printer control panel each time the profile is used to send a scan to email.

Unfortunately, none of these suggestions worked. The error message I keep getting states that "no imaging device can be found". I've gone through the steps listed and  I have uninstalled and installed the software several times, but nothing makes the scanner work. The printer works just fine.

I've not done anything to the printer.  One day the scanner worked,  then a week or so later, the scanner didn't work. I give up.

@AnnTN, Thanks for your quick response and time. 🙂

I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

Do you see the scanner bulb glowing while scanning from your printer?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

How is your printer connected to your PC is it by wired or wireless connection?

1. From Start Menu, go to Run. In the run window, please type services.msc and click on OK.

2. In the Window, please right click on Windows Image Acquisition Service and then click on Properties.

3. In the Properties window, please click on Dependencies window and check the dependencies.
It should be “Remote Procedure Call” and “Shell Hardware Detection”. If you find anything else, please advise.

4. Close the Properties window and then make sure the Remote Procedure Call service and the Shell Hardware Detection services are Started. If any of these services are not started, please restart these services and then restart the Windows Image Acquisition service.

5. After restarting the windows image acquisition service, try to scan again.

Also, try running print and scan doctor on your PC.

Refer this article to know more information about using print and scan doctor on your PC. Link: https://hp.care/2Fhs7n9

If the issue still persists try assigning a manual IP to your printer and check if it helps.

- Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
- Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
- On this screen, you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different if so, use that)
- Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
- Click 'Apply'.

I don't want to be difficult, but how in the heck am I going to see the bulb glowing while scanning when I am unable to scan????? My scanner won't scan. It does nothing related to scanning. When I try to scan I get an error message. My scanner will NOT scan!!!

Again, I have no problems printing. The printer works.

My printer is connected wirelessly.

How do I do this...>>> make sure the Remote Procedure Call service and the Shell Hardware Detection services are Started. If any of these services are not started, please restart these services and then restart the Windows Image Acquisition service.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you try to scan you get error message imaging device not found on your PC.

Did you try making a copy from your printer do you have issues making a copy?

To enable or restart remote procedure call services on your PC you have to go to services and find remote procedure and shell hardware detection.

Please find the screenshot attached below for more information.

Also, if the issue still persists try performing a semi-full reset on your printer and check if it helps.
