I have the same problem. HP5640 prints from PC but when I try and scan either by USB y I get the mesage "Connection required, Selected computer is not available. Make sure that: the computer is turned on, the computer and printer are properlly connected by USB cable, The recommended HP software isinstalled. If I try to scan wirelessly I get the message: One or more of the following problems has prevented the scan from being completed: The connection to the computer has been lost. The scan appliocation is currently in use. Am OCR a[[l;ication is not installed.

Ive tried the obvious; is there a software problme

PC recently upgraded to Windowes 10 64 bit but the scanner did work after the upgrade for a while

Hi @PamBye42

Welcome to the HP Support Community. To assist you better, I would like to know the following:

  • Which scanning application are you using to scan from your Win PC?
  • Do you get any errors while scanning?
  • How is the printer connected to the PC?

Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Also, use HP Smart app to scan and check if that helps.

Click here to download and know more about the app.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for your message.

The stand alone copy function works fine and I can print from my PC. Ive used . The scanner is connected to my PC wirelessly and by USB cable. Ive downloaded HP Smart App but that doesnt solve the problem. The scanner worked OK until a few weeks ago (although it did used to get tired after a dozen scans and fail to recognise the PC). Ive tried disconecting and setting up again but this hasnty worked.

Any ideas?

If you are able to make a copy, it means that the scanner mechanism in the printer is working fine. This could be a possible software/driver issue.

Let us try scanning from the EWS page of the printer:

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  • Go to Scan > Try scanning.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any driver issue

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and click on 'Fix Scanning'.

If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Clean reinstallation of Pre-installed HP drivers

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Try printing and scanning.

Let me know how this goes.

Able to scan from EWS but not from machine. Disconnected everything and  reinstalled printer. Didnt replace driver as I couldnt delete old one but on restarting scanner appears to be working OK. Keeping fingers crossed.
