Having scanning issues HP ENVY 5640 (HPE03202)
I have selected 'add product' several times, it detected it and I select add to dashboard, but never appears.
W11 PC and have HP Smart installed.
PC prints fine to printer.
When I start up HP Smart and press on SCAN button, I get error that “Scanning is Currently Unavailable”
I run diagnostics – does not find anything wrong
I then get asked to download HP Print and Doctor, it downloads, runs and on screen it detects printer and advises it's communicating and it reports all OK.
It then does a Test Print fine.
I then try Scanning test – all OK
It then goes through step and as far as Windows WIA scan all go green .... it then fails on HP TWAIN Scan (but think that is not an issue as I don't use Twain) However if I press SKIP it tests registry .. Green, then on HP SCAN it fails RED and advises :
I have installed SMART and SMART started this test .. yet it advises to install form CD ... there is no CD for W11
I then again try a Scan and again it fails ‘Scanning is Currently Unavailable’
I have select option to install HP Smart – and after uninstall install it again ... it detects Printer .. but when I try a Scan I get 'Scanning is Currently Unavailable'
Any suggestions

Hi @Sargan,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP ENVY 5640 where scanning is unavailable, despite being able to print without problems. Here are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this.
- Restart Devices: Power off your printer and computer, then turn them back on. This can sometimes reset connections.
- Forget and Re-add the Printer: In the HP app, right-click the printer icon and select "Forget Printer." Then click the plus icon to reconfigure the printer on HP App
- Reset HP App: You can reset the HP app by right-clicking it, selecting "More Settings," and finding "App Settings" to reset it. If the problem persists, consider uninstalling and reinstalling the app from the Microsoft Store.
- Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Again: Sometimes running diagnostics multiple times can yield different results. Make sure to check for any updates or errors reported during the process.
- Ensure WIA and TWAIN Drivers are Installed: Even if you don’t use the TWAIN interface, make sure both WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) and TWAIN drivers are correctly installed and up to date. You can find these in the Device Manager under "Imaging devices".
- Check for Software Updates: Ensure that both Windows and the HP app are fully updated. This can help resolve compatibility issues.
- Firewall/Antivirus Settings: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus settings can block communication between your PC and printer. Check to see if the HP app is allowed through the firewall.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I have carried out full power removal of PC and printer.
Then removed printer form settings.
I reconnected.. and now scan works.
You mention install drivers .... how ? ..... on previous Windows versions there was a Download install pack (equivalent to CD) there does not seem to be any driver download for W11 ?
I'd like to make sure W11 has correct software & drivers for this printer, and also make sure Printer has latest f/w how do I do that, can't find an install st of files.

Hi @Sargan,
Thank you for your response,
To ensure your HP ENVY 5640 has the correct drivers and firmware for Windows 11, here’s a step-by-step guide.
Download and Install HP Full Feature Software and Drivers
- Go to HP's Support Page:
- Visit HP Support and type in your printer model (HP ENVY 5640).
- Choose Drivers from the list of support options and select Windows 11 as the operating system.
- Look for Full Feature Software and Drivers (or similar package).
- Download and Install:
- Download the file and follow the on-screen installation instructions. This package typically includes all necessary drivers and utilities for scanning and printing.
Use the HP Smart App (Recommended for Windows 11)
- Download from Microsoft Store:
- Open the Microsoft Store on your computer, search for HP Smart, and install the app.
- Open HP Smart, sign in (if required), and add your printer.
- Configure Scanning:
- Use HP Smart to set up scanning capabilities, as this app ensures the latest drivers and functionality.
Update Printer Firmware
- Using HP Smart:
- With the printer connected, open HP Smart and click on your printer.
- Navigate to Advanced Settings or Printer Maintenance.
- Check for Firmware Update options and follow the prompts to ensure the printer has the latest firmware.
- From Printer’s Embedded Web Server:
- You can also update the firmware through the printer’s IP address if available. Enter the printer’s IP in your web browser, go to Tools or Web Services and select Product Update.
Confirm Driver Compatibility (WIA and TWAIN Drivers)
- Check in Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager and locate Imaging Devices.
- Right-click your printer and select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Enable Windows Image Acquisition Service:
- Open Services (type services.msc in the search bar) and look for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). Make sure it’s set to Automatic and running.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I always have issue installing HP printer s/w
Downloaded 'pack' as you advised, started inatll ... went through the 1...2...3.. dots on the screen then asked for my IP address .. strange as it's plugged into printer.
It carried on install and then advised I should install an App to make use & updates easier (was this HP Smart?) I clicked on install and it stopped at that point .... clicking on install would have no action.
I then tried uninstall and it started then gave this error:
Pressing ignore made it just reappear ..... it eventually timed out and rebooted PC.
Tried re-intall this time was very fast .... about 10x previous speed and not ask to install the 'extra app'
I am now not sure I have the correct install, if try re-installing it just brings up a window with options to add a device or change to wireless.
It has now put printer icon on deskp top as well as HP shopping icon
